Want to mix your love for homemade candy with a healthy dose of nostalgia? What better way to do this than to make your own tootsie rolls that will rival the taste of those classic toffees that you couldn’t stay away from as a kid! Making your own version of the tootsie rolls is a lot easier than it sounds and this recipe from Heather Baird on Food52 involves no baking or cooking whatsoever.
Ingredients for Tootsie Rolls:
- ½ cup honey
- ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon unsalted, melted butter
- 1 to 1 ¼ cup instant non-fat dry milk powder
- Pinch of salt
Now it is time to mix honey, cocoa powder and vanilla in a bowl and whisk away. Add the melted butter and powdered sugar at hand to this mixture along with just a pinch of salt and continue whisking. Once you have an even mixture, add the milk powder and knead the dough into a firm ball that is not too sticky. It helps to add the milk powder gradually so that you can get the desired texture.
From here it is simply a matter of cutting it into candy strips and wrapping them up so that you can gift them to friends and family even while enjoying a few yourselves! Kids’ at home will obviously love these and most importantly, it will bring back memories of those awesome childhood days where the little things in life put a big smile on your face.
