Make a Style Statement: DIY Leather Jewelry

We absolutely love making our own jewelry. We enjoy browsing and choosing designs, we like gathering the supplies, and we have a total blast making our own pieces. On top of all that, it’s a rewarding process because we get to wear it at the end of the day! Lately, our biggest obsession has been jewelry involving leather. It’s just such a versatile material and there are so many different styles and aesthetics you can create when you use it in jewelry!

Check out this list of 15 of our favourite leather jewelry ideas as of right now! We genuinely can’t wait to make everything on this list. Seriously, we’ve already made three. We’re not kidding.

1. Leather wrapped bangles

Do you have a set of old bangles that you really love the look of, but that you don’t often wear because you can’t stand how they clatter against one another when you move? Well, here’s the most stylish solution we could have imagined! Handmadera wove a leather string between their bangles to make an intricate looking cuff rather than tiny individual bracelets. We love the way the gold peeks through between the leather loops.

2. Leather triangle earrings

VIEW IN GALLERYleather-triangle-earrings

As if the idea of little leather triangles dangling from your ears isn’t cute enough, this design from Hello Glow shows you how to layer other triangles underneath! We love the idea of including at least one triangle in a contrasting colour of leather, just to give them a little extra attitude.

3. Five minute leather bow hair tie

We love the idea of fastening our ponytail with a little leather bow, but that doesn’t work very well with thin hair! Instead, we tried Oh The Lovely Things‘s method of attaching the leather tie to an elastic hair tie and we had much more luck. Try it out if you have very thin or fine hair too!

4. Twisted leather rings

Do you have some very small leather string scraps left over from one of the other leather jewelry projects you already made? Then this is the perfect opportunity for you to use them up, but in an effective and stylish way! Check out how Hello Hydrangea used twisting techniques to create these adorable little knuckle rings.

5. Leather cutout bib necklace

Bib necklaces are in the height of fashion right now and we love to follow trends, but we do still enjoy switching things up every once in a while. Instead of a classic beaded or sequinned style of bib, we think this leather cut out idea is full of attitude. Check out how it’s cut on A Nest for All Seasons, but feel free to customize your own design if you feel confident enough!

6. Leather arrows bracelet

Sometimes the neatest DIY ideas are the simplest! We love the way By Wilma combined leather with a delicate chain in this double arrow design. Cut the arrow shape from a length of leather material and make a slit near the tip and near the tail of each one to slip the chain through. Loop it around your wrist several times like a wrap bracelet so the arrows sit flat.

7. Leather and feather necklace

A Clover and A Bee guides you through the process of creating a necklace on a leather string, also featuring a little leather bib decorated in feathers. We adore the sort of cowboy chic vibes we get from it and we like that you could use any type or shade of feathers you please.

8. Mini studded leather bracelets

Do you love the idea of wearing leather bracelets, but you don’t want the overall look to be too dark or edgy? Lightly coloured leather cut into thin strips is a good  option for you then! We like that these ones by Martha Stewart feature little gold studs that are delicate enough to stay sweet looking, but still prominent.

9. Leather tassel jewelry

Do you love just about any jewelry piece that has a tassel, no matter what the tassel is made of? Then we suggest following in the foot steps of Brit + Co. to combine your loves of tassels and leather by making- you guessed it- a leather tassel! Hang a single one of a decent size on a delicate chain like this one so that the tassel really stays the main focus of the piece.

10. DIY leather floral necklace

Big flowers are some of our very favourite it things when it comes to making our own jewelry, so you can imagine our excitement when we found a design that includes not just huge coloured blossoms, but huge coloured blossoms made of leather! Learn not only how to make your own leather flowers, but also how to make them into an awesomely stylish necklace, all from Plan B!

11. Gold leather collar

Do you adore collar necklaces of any kind, whether they’re made of pearls, rhinestones, or plastic beads? Well, we’re right there with you! We’re particularly big fans of this simple leather collar design from Refinery 29! As if a jewelry piece involving regular leather wasn’t enough, they’ve got us thinking about leather with a pretty metallic shine!

12. Painted leather bracelets

Do you love the natural texture of leather, but you also like pieces that are eclectic and have a lot of character? Then we think you’ll be a big fan of this painted leather cuff bracelet on A Beautiful Mess. Check out how they made theirs, but consider creating your own painted designs too!

13. Leather mirror tiles necklace

Brit + Co. guides you through the process of making an eye catching geometric chain featuring bright folded leather rectangles that have been decorated with mirrored squares! We’re absolutely in love with the idea because the mirrors will catch light just like sequins or rhinestones but they suit the geometric vibe here much better!

14. Buttoned leather wrap bracelet

Do you remember making friendship bracelets out of embroidery floss or hemp string as a kid? Well, this wrapped leather bracelet is made using some of those same techniques, but with a rustic chic twist! We love the gold beads poking out between the braided strands. We also like the idea of making this in other colours of leather string too! Check out the pattern for making it on Lebenlustiger.

15. Folded leather leaves necklace

Sometimes a little bit of structure is neat in a jewelry piece, especially if the central part is made of leather. We like that it starts to look more like art. This folded leaf necklace by Little Livingstone is a great example!
