Before you pack away seasonal clothes, avoid this storage mistake: it leaves them full of holes

You pull out your favorite sweater on the first cool morning of the year. You unfold it, hold it up, and there they are. Small round holes, scattered across the front like someone touched a lit cigarette to it. You know exactly what happened, and exactly what that sweater cost.

The part that stings most: the sweaters this happens to are almost never the ones you wore all last winter. It’s the good ones. The cashmere. The merino. The wool coat you barely touched. The ones you were careful with before you packed them away.

That’s what’s so weird about it. And the reason it keeps happening to your “clean” clothes is the same reason it keeps happening to you, specifically.

The damage that shows up months later

If you store any wool, cashmere, silk, or fur for the off-season, the odds of pulling it out with holes are much higher than most people think. The damage is invisible while it’s happening, because it happens in a dark, quiet closet or bin, all summer, while you’re not looking.

By the time you notice, whatever caused it is usually long gone from that sweater. So a lot of people replace the sweater, close the closet, and get hit again the next year with a different one.

The bug experts at the University of Kentucky’s extension office (one of the go-to US sources on closet pests) have been saying the same thing for years: this kind of damage can build up in your home without any sign, and once it’s done, it’s done. You don’t see the problem until you see the aftermath.

And the aftermath is expensive. A single cashmere sweater can run $150 to $400 (about €140 to €370). A good wool coat can easily pass $500 (about €465). It doesn’t take many “surprise” losses a year to add up to real money.

Why the closet, and why the good stuff

There’s a reason this damage keeps hitting one part of your house and skipping the rest.

The clothes you wear keep getting moved, shaken out, thrown in the wash, hung back up. According to the University of Kentucky’s guide by bug specialist Michael Potter, clothes that get regular use hardly ever get chewed. The problem is what sits still.

Off-season storage is the perfect setup. Dark. Quiet. Nobody touches it for months. Whatever gets in has all the time in the world to grow up in there without you noticing a thing.

There’s also a mix-up worth clearing up. Most people blame the little flying insect they see fluttering out of a closet now and then. But those grown-up bugs don’t eat anything at all, according to the same Kentucky guide. It’s a different, younger stage that does the damage, and it’s already on the fabric before the flying one shows up. So when you spot one and think, “I need to deal with that bug,” it’s already too late. And when you don’t see any flying around all year and still find holes, it’s because the damage happened quietly.

There’s also a lookalike issue: carpet beetles. The University of Maryland Extension points out that damage blamed on moths is often actually these beetles instead. The good news is the fix is the same for both, so you don’t need to figure out which one before you solve it.

The theory that seems right, and isn’t

At this point, most people jump to the same guess: the container is the problem. Get a better bag. Get a vacuum bag. Get a plastic bin with a real lid.

That helps. It’s not the whole answer. If a better container fixed it on its own, nobody with a sealed bin would ever lose a sweater, and plenty do.

The other common guess is cedar. A cedar chest, cedar blocks in the closet, a little bag of cedar chips in the bin. This one has hundreds of years of tradition behind it and a lot of confident advice online. It’s also weaker than most people think, especially the way it’s usually used. More on that in the fix section.

So if it’s not the container and it’s not the cedar, what is it? What’s making one sweater a target and the identical one right next to it get left alone?

The answer is on the sweater. It’s been there the whole time.

Why it keeps happening to the “clean” ones

Now, this is the part almost everyone misses.

Moth larvae (the tiny worms that do the chewing) don’t eat clean wool. They can’t. The University of Maryland Extension is pretty blunt about it: dirty wool is their main food, and they can’t finish growing up on clean wool because they need certain nutrients that are only in stained or dirty fabric.

Read that twice. A truly clean wool sweater, sealed away from the world, is basically inedible to the thing you’re worried about.

So what’s making your sweaters edible?

You are. Every time you wear one.

Even a few hours of wear leaves behind sweat, skin oil, and tiny flakes of dead skin on the fibers. You can’t see it. It doesn’t smell. It doesn’t look dirty. But it’s there, and it’s exactly what these little worms need to feed. Penn State Extension puts it plainly: even fabrics they normally leave alone (like cotton or synthetic blends) become fair game when they’ve got body oil or food stains on them. The National Pesticide Information Center at Oregon State University adds that these pests are especially drawn to fabric with sweat, food, or urine stains.

That’s the whole story. The sweater you wore once before packing it away, because “it’s basically still clean,” is the one most at risk. The one you wore twenty times and washed six times last winter is actually less interesting to them than the one you wore for an hour to dinner and hung right back up.

This is the storage mistake. Not the closet. Not the container. Packing away wool, cashmere, silk, or any animal-based fabric without washing it first.

The fix, step by step

  1. Wash every animal-based item first. Wool, cashmere, merino, silk, mohair, fur, feathers. If you wore it even once, wash it before it goes in. Hand-wash what can handle it, dry clean the rest. Dry cleaning also kills any eggs or worms on there.
  2. Make sure it’s fully dry. Damp fabric in a sealed bin leads to mildew. Air-dry flat and check by hand before packing.
  3. Store it in something actually sealed shut. A cardboard box or open sweater bin won’t keep bugs out. Use heavy-duty zippered garment bags with no gaps, plastic bins with rubber-sealed lids that snap tight, or vacuum bags. If you can slide a piece of paper through the seal, a moth can get in and lay eggs.
  4. Don’t count on cedar alone. Colonial Pest Control, going through the research, notes that even a brand-new cedar chest only kills the smallest worms, and a chest over three years old barely does anything. Cedar can help. It can’t do the job alone.
  5. Pick a cool, dry, dark spot. Skip damp basements and hot attics.

What this fix won’t do

It won’t fix holes that are already there; a tailor’s reweaving is the only real repair. If you’re finding damage right now in something that just came out of storage, the University of Kentucky says the easiest move is to stick it in the freezer at 0°F (about -18°C) for at least 72 hours to kill anything left inside.

Your best sweaters aren’t unlucky. A little wear leaves invisible food behind. Wash it, seal it, forget it.
