You know the sound. The dryer buzzer goes off, you open the door expecting warm laundry, and instead you get clothes that are still cool and damp in the middle. So you shut the door, hit start again, and wait another 40 minutes. One load, two cycles, every time.
Most people figure the dryer’s on its way out. The heater’s weak. The vent’s clogged. Time to save up for a new one. Some of that could be true, and cleaning your lint trap and dryer vent is always worth doing. But before you spend a dollar on a repair guy or a new machine, there’s a five-second fix that solves this exact problem in a huge number of American homes. And it’s got nothing to do with the dryer.
Your dryer isn’t the one messing up
Here is the part almost nobody thinks about. Your dryer really only has one job: use hot air to cook the water out of your clothes. Every extra drop of water still stuck in the fabric when it goes in is another drop the dryer has to heat off. That’s it. That’s the whole trick.
So if your clothes are going into the dryer soaking wet, the dryer isn’t broken. It’s just being asked to do twice the work every load, and it’s charging you for both trips.
The U.S. Department of Energy has the numbers on this, and they’re not small. According to the DOE, the average electric dryer eats up about 782 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year. That’s roughly 3.3% of all the energy used in American homes, which is more than most refrigerators. Electric dryers also pull between 1,800 and 5,000 watts the whole time they’re running, which is why they show up on almost every list of the biggest power hogs in the average house.
Now double that runtime because the clothes went in too wet, and you can see the bill problem right there in real time.
What “too wet” actually means
Every dryer is built with a rough guess baked in about how wet your clothes will be when they go in. If they show up wetter than that guess, the dryer has to run a whole extra heating round to finish the job, even after the sensor already ran once.
Consumer Reports points to appliance testing that says cutting the water left in a load by even 10% can shave 15 to 20 minutes off your drying time. So if your dryer’s running an extra cycle right now, the fault might not sit with the dryer at all. It might just be that the load walked in carrying way more water than the dryer was ever built to handle.
And here’s where the second cost sneaks in. When the dryer finishes a round and the sensor still says “damp,” the machine kicks off another full heat cycle on top of the stuff that’s already dry. So the T-shirts and lighter items that dried the first time around now get cooked for a second cycle they never needed. Lab tests by Reviewed, the testing arm of USA Today, clocked dryer temperatures anywhere from 106°F to 188°F (41°C to 87°C). Anything that stays above around 150°F (66°C) is where fabric starts to get damaged. So that “second cycle” isn’t just costing you money. It’s slowly baking your favorite shirt.
The upstream problem almost nobody checks
So if the dryer’s fine and the load’s just too wet, where’s all that extra water coming from? Not from the wash itself. Not from the rinse. It’s from the very last thing your washer does before it beeps and says it’s done.
Most Americans never touch this last step. It just runs on whatever default the machine picked the last time you hit start. And that default is set to be safe for every kind of fabric, not to hand the dryer a well-drained load. It’s the same one-size-fits-all logic that gives you soaking-heavy towels one week and a barely-damp T-shirt the next. The washer’s playing it safe. Your dryer’s paying the tab.
So, this is what people miss. Your dryer is only supposed to handle the last bit of the water removal. The washer’s job is to spin most of the water out first, using the drum, in the last stretch of the wash. And on the default setting, that final spin is doing a lot less than most people realize. There’s one specific dial on your washer that controls this, and it’s the piece almost no household ever touches.
The five-second fix
On almost every modern washer, there’s a separate button or dial for spin speed. It’s usually marked in RPM, which just means how many times the drum spins around per minute. Higher number, faster spin, more water thrown out of the clothes before they ever see the dryer. Lower number, gentler on delicate fabrics, but a lot more water left behind.
If you never touch that button, your washer usually picks a middle-of-the-road setting that’s safe for mixed loads but leaves your towels, jeans, and sheets a lot wetter than they need to be. The fix is this: before you hit start, bump the spin speed up to the highest setting your load can handle.
The proof is straight from the federal source. ENERGY STAR, the joint program run by the EPA and the DOE, tells homeowners flat out: pick the high spin speed or extended spin option to get more water out of your clothes, so the dryer doesn’t have to run as long. Consumer Reports lists the same move in its official energy-saving laundry tips.
Multiple appliance-testing sources put a real number on it: going from a slower 800 RPM spin to a faster 1,400 RPM spin can leave your clothes 20 to 30% drier before they ever hit the dryer. That’s usually the difference between one dryer cycle and two.
Do this before your next load
Match the spin speed to what’s in the drum:
- Towels, jeans, sheets, sturdy cotton T-shirts: the highest setting your washer offers, usually 1,200 to 1,400 RPM on front-loaders, or the top “high” spin option on top-loaders. These are the loads where the savings are biggest.
- Everyday cotton blends and casual synthetic wear: somewhere around 1,000 to 1,200 RPM. Middle-high, not middle.
- Delicates, workout stuff with elastic, wool, silk, lace: 400 to 800 RPM. Leave the low setting alone here. Sort these into their own load so you can spin the sturdy stuff hard.
One honest heads-up: higher spins can leave shirts a bit more wrinkled. Easy fix from Consumer Reports: pull the load out right away, shake each piece open before it goes in the dryer, or run a permanent-press dry cycle. Towels and jeans don’t wrinkle, so this only really matters for shirts.
If you’ve got an older top-loader with a big center agitator, your max spin tops out lower (around 700 to 900 RPM). You’ll still gain drying time by picking the high-spin option, just not quite as dramatically as a front-loader owner will.
The real reason your dryer looked broken
The dryer wasn’t dying. It was being handed a job that was twice its size, load after load, quietly, for months or years. The spin dial on the washer is the cheapest, fastest fix in the whole laundry room. Five seconds, zero dollars, and your dryer finishes in one cycle again. Before you call a tech or start shopping for a new appliance, try it on your next load of towels. You’ll hear the difference in the buzzer.
