Every spring, the same thing plays out in thousands of American homes. Somebody heads out back, turns on the garden hose for the first time since fall, and within a minute, water’s running down a wall inside the house. Not outside where the tap is. Inside. Down through the drywall, into the floor, sometimes into a finished basement.
The homeowner is stunned. The outside tap looks fine. Nothing was leaking an hour ago.
What they’re looking at is a crack that’s been sitting there, quietly, since January.
That’s the sneaky thing about frozen pipe damage from an outdoor tap. It doesn’t announce itself when it happens. The pipe splits in the dead of winter, while everything’s still frozen solid, and then it just waits. No alarm. No puddle. The break stays invisible until spring, when someone opens the tap and water finally rushes through the crack. By then it isn’t a plumbing bill anymore. It’s a construction project.

Why your outside tap is the sneakiest freeze risk in the whole house
Water expands by about 9% when it freezes, and inside a sealed pipe, that expansion has nowhere to go. It isn’t the ice pushing on the pipe wall that does the damage, like most people picture. It’s the trapped water between the ice and a closed valve, getting squeezed to a wild amount of pressure. This Old House puts pressures inside a freezing pipe as high as 25,000 psi (about 1,720 bar). Utica National Insurance confirms this, and points out that the pipe usually bursts where there’s little or no ice, at the weakest spot in the run.
An outdoor tap is the perfect setup for this to go wrong. The metal sits out in the open, exposed to wind chill and overnight lows. The pipe feeding it runs through the coldest wall in the house. And most homeowners never drain it, because there’s no obvious way to.
The Insurance Information Institute lists water damage and freezing as the second most common home insurance claim category in the country. In early 2025, State Farm alone reported over 20,000 frozen pipe and water damage claims totaling more than $628 million, with an average payout above $30,000 (roughly €27,600 or £23,700). Even a tiny crack matters. The Hilb Group notes a break as narrow as 1/8 inch (about 3 mm) can dump over 250 gallons (roughly 946 liters) of water in a single day.
And the wall-damage version is the worst kind, because it goes unnoticed for weeks or months. Wilson Family Plumbing describes the classic spring pattern: a homeowner opens a hose bib for the first time after winter, and within a minute, water’s coming through the ceiling of a downstairs room. The tap outside looks perfectly fine. The break happened back in January.
What most homes are actually missing
Walk down to your basement or crawl space with a flashlight. Follow the water line along the ceiling, and find the branch that runs toward the outside wall where your garden spigot is mounted. In a lot of homes, that branch has nothing on it at all. The pipe just runs straight through the wall to the spigot outside. No way to shut off the outdoor tap on its own. No way to drain the stretch of pipe sitting in the coldest part of the house.
In other homes there’s a shutoff, but it’s a plain one, the kind that just turns water on and off. You close it in the fall, you go outside and open the spigot, and some water drains out. But not all of it. There’s no way to let air into the line, so water stays trapped between the closed valve and the outside spigot. That trapped water is exactly what freezes and cracks the pipe.
The American Red Cross has this exact scenario in its official winter guidance: close the inside valves that feed your outdoor taps, open the outside tap so the water can drain, and leave the outside tap open so any water still in the pipe has room to expand without breaking anything. But that guidance only works if the indoor shutoff has one small extra feature on it. Without that feature, the outside tap will still hold water back in the line no matter how long you leave it open, because air can’t get in to break the seal.
That missing feature is a tiny threaded cap on the side of the indoor valve. It looks like a small brass thumb-screw, usually pointing down or off to the side, no bigger than a pencil eraser. Loosen that cap after you close the valve, and air rushes into the line, and every drop of water between the valve and the outside spigot drains right out. The pipe running through your exterior wall ends up bone dry, which means nothing can freeze in it.
That cap is what’s missing in most American homes. Not the whole valve. Just the little bleed cap.
The five-minute fall check that tells you if you’re safe
Before the first hard freeze in your area, take that flashlight back down to the basement or crawl space. Trace the pipe from where your outside spigot enters the wall, back inside. Then look at it carefully:
- Is there any valve at all on that branch? If not, that’s your problem. The pipe running through your exterior wall stays full of pressurized water all winter.
- If there is a valve, is there a small threaded cap sticking off the side of it? If yes, you’re set.
- If the valve has no such cap, you have half the solution. You can shut the water off, but you can’t drain the line, so trapped water can still freeze inside the wall.
If you have the cap, the yearly routine takes about 30 seconds. Take your garden hose off and store it indoors. Close the indoor valve. Open the outside spigot all the way. Put a small bucket or a rag under the bleed cap and loosen it a turn or two. Water trickles out until the line is empty. Tighten the cap back down and leave the outside spigot open for the rest of winter.
If not, the fix is doable. Boshart Industries, a US valve maker, calls out two parts that do this job: a stop-and-waste valve, or a quarter-turn ball valve with a built-in drain. A push-fit version (SharkBite and other brands sell them at any hardware store) costs roughly $15 to $30 (about €14 to €28 or £12 to £24) and clips onto copper, PEX, or CPVC pipe with no soldering. On an easy-to-reach pipe run, it’s a 15 to 30 minute job for a confident DIYer with a pipe cutter. If the pipe is tucked somewhere awkward, a plumber can usually knock it out in under an hour.
This whole thing applies to standard outdoor spigots. If you have a frost-free spigot (a longer version where the shutoff sits deep inside the heated wall), you already have the equivalent built in, though it still helps to add a foam cover on nights below 20°F (about -7°C).
