You go to close a kitchen cabinet door and it swings the wrong way. The hinge is loose. You grab a screwdriver, tighten the screw, and it just spins forever. Never grabs. The hole is stripped.
It’s one of the most common little kitchen headaches in the country, and it’s also one of the most misunderstood. Almost everyone reaches for the wrong tool. Not because they’re careless. It’s because the fix that actually works is the exact opposite of what your gut tells you, and it uses two things that are probably sitting in a drawer in your kitchen right now, for free.
The move most people make feels smart. It holds for about two weeks. Then it quietly wrecks the cabinet from the inside until the whole door has to come off. Cabinets that could’ve easily lasted another ten years end up getting replaced over this one moment. And that adds up fast. Just swapping out one cabinet door runs $75 to $200 (about €70 to €185). Replacing the whole cabinet box can hit $300 or more. The real fix, on the other hand, takes about five minutes of hands-on work, costs you nothing, and holds for years.
But you’ve got to understand why that hole gave out in the first place. Because once you get that, the right move becomes obvious.

Why the hole gave out
A screw doesn’t hold because you cranked it in tight. It holds because the little grooves on it (the threads) grab onto the tiny wood fibers inside the hole, and those fibers push back.
When a hole is brand new, hundreds of these tiny fibers grip every turn of the screw, so the weight of the door is spread out across the whole thing. It stays put for years. But every time you swing that cabinet door open and closed, the hinge takes a tiny twist. Over the years, that adds up. The fibers slowly wear down. Then one day, they give up entirely. That’s when the screw starts spinning in place. There’s nothing left in there for it to hold onto.
Now the part almost nobody knows: most kitchen cabinets built in the last thirty years aren’t actually solid wood where the hinges attach. They’re particle board or MDF (that’s fiberboard, basically wood chips or sawdust pressed together with glue). It looks like real wood on the outside because of a thin veneer, but underneath, it’s not.
Engineer Fix, which breaks down how screws grip different materials, explains that this pressed-together stuff doesn’t have the long, connected wood fibers that give a screw its grip. It was built to hold your original screw at the original tightness, and that’s it. Once the hole is shot, there isn’t much left in there to work with. It can’t repair itself.
So this is different from most fixes you’ve done around the house. A stripped drywall anchor? Grab a bigger anchor, no problem. A stripped bolt in metal? A shop can cut new threads for you. But a stripped hinge hole in cabinet wood is a small, thin patch of soft material, and every move you make either helps rebuild it or eats away at what’s still holding your cabinet together.
That’s where most people lose the cabinet without realizing it. And they all take the same wrong turn, because it feels like the strongest thing you could do. It feels like an upgrade. It’s the opposite. Once you know why, you’ll spot the mistake in half the kitchens on your block.
The move that quietly wrecks it
You know what most people reach for. A bigger screw. Or a longer one. Bigger screw, bigger grip, done, right?
Wrong. And it fails three ways.
- First, it can split the wood. The fatter threads shove outward against material that’s already crumbling. Hunker’s guide on this is blunt: a much bigger screw can split the panel. Once it splits, you’re not fixing a hinge anymore. You’re shopping for a new door.
- Second, the bigger head throws off your door. Nathan Gilbert, a carpenter over at This Old House, warns about this one. A bigger screw usually has a bigger head, and that head sits higher than the hinge is designed for. So when the door swings shut, that head bangs into the cabinet frame and knocks everything out of alignment.
- Third, and this is the slowest one. The bigger screw might feel solid for a few weeks. But every open and shut of the door puts a small twist on the hinge, and the weakened wood keeps giving. A month or two later, the hole is even looser than before, and now it’s too big for even the bigger screw.
A bigger screw doesn’t fix anything. It just digs the grave deeper.
What actually works
The real fix isn’t a stronger screw at all. It’s rebuilding what’s inside the hole, so your original screw grips again like the day the cabinet was made.
All you need is a small handful of flat wooden toothpicks and a small bottle of wood glue. That’s it. If you’ve got both in a drawer, this costs you nothing. If you need the glue, it’s around $4 (roughly €3.70) at any hardware store. A bottle of Titebond or Elmer’s Wood Glue will last a decade.
This isn’t some internet trick. It’s the same method Tom Silva, master carpenter on This Old House, has shown for years. Family Handyman publishes it. And cabinet maker Woodpro Cabinetry puts it in the official repair guide for its own cabinets.
Step by step
- Take the loose screw all the way out. Pop the hinge off too if it’s easier to work with.
- Grab 3 or 4 flat toothpicks. Flat ones pack in tighter than round ones.
- Dip the tips in wood glue so they’re fully coated.
- Push them into the hole one by one, packing them in tight until no more will fit. Tap the last one in gently with the back of your screwdriver.
- Watch for a little bead of glue to squeeze out around the toothpicks. That’s Tom Silva’s tip: if glue oozes out, the inside is fully coated. If it doesn’t, drop a bit more glue on top.
- Snap the toothpicks off flush with the cabinet. A utility knife works, or break them off with your fingernail. Wipe extra glue with a damp rag.
- Let it dry. This is where people rush and mess it up. Titebond’s own guide says their wood glue needs 30 to 60 minutes just to set, and a full 24 hours to hit full strength before it can take any weight. A cabinet hinge screw takes weight the second you hang the door. So wait at least an hour before driving the screw. Overnight is better if you can swing it. That’s the difference between a fix that holds for six months and one that holds for six years.
- Drive the original screw back in. Not a bigger one. It’ll cut fresh grooves into the hardened plug and grip like the hole was new.
When this won’t cut it
If the hole’s already bigger than about a quarter inch across (roughly 6mm), toothpicks won’t fill it. Use a wooden dowel that matches the hole size, glued in the same way. If the wood around the hole is soft or spongy from water damage, that’s rot, and you’re dealing with a different problem. Anything short of that, this fixes.
That loose cabinet door isn’t asking for a bigger screw. It’s asking you to give the old one something to grab. The cabinet you were about to give up on? It’s fine.
