Every winter, thousands of Americans come home from a trip to a sound they’ll never forget. Water running behind a wall. A ceiling sagging in the middle. A floor that squishes when they step on it.
They didn’t leave a faucet on. They didn’t skip a bill. They did the thing they thought was smart, the one thing almost every homeowner does before locking up. And that’s the exact reason a pipe blew apart while they were gone.
The folks who study this for a living aren’t shy about it. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, the research group the insurance industry pays to figure out what wrecks houses, keeps warning people every winter. It’s not the cold snap. It’s not old plumbing. It’s one small choice people make on their way out.
What actually breaks a pipe in winter
Here’s the part almost nobody gets right, and it changes everything.
When people picture a pipe bursting, they picture the ice inside doing it. Water freezes, it expands, the pipe splits. Case closed. That’s not what happens.
According to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, the ice itself isn’t what breaks the pipe. The ice creates a plug. Water on the other side of that plug, still liquid, gets trapped between the ice and a closed faucet further down the line. That trapped water gets squeezed, and squeezed, and the pressure has nowhere to go.
That’s what splits the pipe. Not the ice. The pressure.
And here’s the weird part: the pipe often bursts in a spot where there’s no ice at all. Six feet (about 2 meters) away from where the freeze happened. That’s why folks can’t figure out where the leak came from when it finally shows up.
The damage is bigger than most folks think
This isn’t a “call a plumber” situation. It’s the kind of thing that eats a whole house.
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety measured what a crack the width of a pencil tip can do. A one-eighth-inch (about 3 mm) crack in a household water pipe pours out up to 250 gallons a day (roughly 950 liters). That’s a full bathtub every hour, until somebody notices. A long weekend away means around a thousand gallons before you get home. A full week away means over 1,700 gallons (about 6,400 liters) pouring into your walls, floors, and ceiling.
And then there’s the part almost no homeowner hears about until the insurance guy shows up.
The insurance twist that catches folks off guard
Read your homeowners policy sometime. The fine print usually says the insurance company will cover sudden water damage if you took reasonable steps to keep the pipes from freezing. If you didn’t, they can flat out deny the claim.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners spells it out. Most policies say you have to keep the house at a minimum temperature, or shut the water off if it’s going to sit empty. Miss that, and a burst pipe stops being a covered “sudden and accidental” event and starts being “neglect.” That means you’re on the hook for the whole bill.
Which brings us back to the small, boring choice people make every winter that puts them right in that neglect column.
The habit that feels smart, and isn’t
Picture it. You’re leaving town for five days. You walk past the thermostat on your way out and think, why heat an empty house? You crank it down to 50. Or 45. Or you shut it off. You feel responsible. You just saved yourself real money.
That’s the move.
That’s the one the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, the American Red Cross, and Consumer Reports have been warning about for years. That one choice is how the pipe gets cold enough to freeze. Without the heat holding your house above freezing, cold air creeps into every space where a pipe runs. Along an outside wall. Under a kitchen sink on an outer wall. In a basement, garage, or attic where the heat barely reaches.
The ice forms. The pressure builds. The pipe blows in a spot you can’t see, while you’re 800 miles (about 1,300 km) away.
The heating bill you “saved”? Usually 20 to 80 dollars for the trip. The average insurance claim to fix everything a burst pipe wrecks runs well into five figures.
The fix, and it’s smaller than you think
Here’s what the folks who study this say to do. It’s cheap, most of it’s free.
- Set the thermostat to 55°F (about 13°C), not lower, before you leave. The American Red Cross tells people to use this exact number for any home that’ll sit empty in cold weather. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety uses the same 55°F floor. Below that, you’re in the neglect zone. At or above it, the inside of your walls stays warm enough that pipes don’t freeze.
- Open the cabinet doors under any sink on an outside wall. Both the American Red Cross and Consumer Reports call this one out. Closed cabinets act like a little cold-storage box around the pipes. A field test by Benjamin Franklin Plumbing measured a 9°F (about 5°C) difference between closed and open cabinets on a cold night. Nine degrees is often the difference between water and ice. Move cleaning products up high first if you’ve got kids or pets.
- Leave one faucet dripping on the coldest nights. This is what stops the pressure that actually splits the pipe. If any ice does form, a slow drip keeps pressure from building up between the ice and the tap. The American Red Cross recommends a slow trickle from a faucet fed by exposed pipes.
- If you’ll be gone more than a few days in serious cold, shut the water main off completely. No water in the pipes means no pressure to build up, and no flood if something cracks. Takes about thirty seconds if you know where the shutoff is.
- Know where that shutoff is before you need it. If a pipe lets go while you’re home, the difference between a $500 cleanup and a $25,000 one is how fast you can stop the water.
