The door that drags, sticks, or won’t latch? It almost always comes back to one overlooked detail

You know the door. The one that drags across the carpet in winter. The one you have to lift, or lean into, or slam a little to get the latch to catch. The one where the gap at the top is wider on one side than the other, and you’ve stopped noticing because it’s been like that for a year.

If you’ve ever tightened the hinge screws and had the door feel great for a week before going right back to sticking, you’re not imagining it. The hinges aren’t the problem. The pins aren’t the problem. The wood isn’t warped, the house isn’t shifting, and you don’t need to shave the door with a planer. You need to look at the screws themselves, and at one specific thing about how they’re sitting.

Most homes get this wrong the first time a door starts acting up, and the door pays for it every day after.

What’s really going on when a door starts acting up

A door that drags, sticks, or won’t latch has almost always come loose at the hinge, even when the hinge looks totally fine from a few feet away. According to This Old House general contractor Tom Silva, the gap between the door and the frame should be about 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch (roughly 3 to 5 mm), about the thickness of a nickel. When that gap goes uneven, the hinges are usually why.

There’s a ten-second check the pros use. Open the door halfway and lift up on the handle. If any part of the hinge shifts or moves at all, the screws need attention. That tiny bit of wiggle is what’s making the door hard to close. Every swing after that is basically working the problem deeper into the wood.

Now the part almost nobody thinks about. When you spot the wobble and tighten everything up, the door might feel great for a few days. Then it starts sticking again. That’s not because the screws worked loose. It’s because the screws were never the right fit in the first place, and tightening them harder just chews the hole up a little more each time.

And “the right fit” isn’t just about how long the screw is. It’s not just about how thick it is. It’s one specific thing almost everyone misses, and it’s the reason the same fix keeps failing on the same door.

Why “just tighten it” almost never sticks

If you’ve owned a house for more than a couple years, you’ve done this: door starts sticking, you grab the driver, you snug up every hinge screw, and you walk away feeling handy. Two weeks later, same door, same drag. So you do it again. And again. And each round of tightening actually makes it a little worse.

There’s a reason. The standard screws that come with new doors are usually only about 3/4 of an inch (about 2 cm) long. According to multiple hardware guides, those short screws only bite into the door frame trim, the thin piece of wood right around the opening, not the solid wall stud (the 2×4 piece of framing) behind it. Every time you close a heavy door, all that weight yanks on those little 3/4-inch screws. Over the years, they slowly chew up the wood behind them. That’s why yours keep spinning without tightening.

But the length is only half the story, and it’s not even the half that most people get wrong. Even a fresh, correctly-sized screw driven into fresh, solid wood can still leave the door acting up. The real culprit is smaller than the screw’s length. It’s smaller than its thickness. And it’s happening in a spot on the hinge you’ve probably never looked at closely.

Think about the last time a hinge screw needed replacing at your house. What did you grab? Odds are it was whatever screw looked about the right size from a coffee can or a junk drawer. That’s how the problem gets baked in. And once it’s baked in, no amount of tightening or lubricant will fix it, because those things don’t touch what’s actually wedging the door out of place.

The overlooked detail, and why the door tells on it every day

Take a close look at any door hinge and you’ll see something specific about the screw holes. Each hole has a small dip around it, kind of like a shallow funnel. That dip is there so the flat head of the screw can drop in and sit perfectly level with the metal, or a hair below it.

That level fit isn’t for looks. When the two flat sides of the hinge fold shut as the door closes, they need to lie completely flat against each other. A screw head sitting even a hair too high acts like a tiny wedge between them. The Screwfix Community forum walked through this exact problem: a door with resistance in the last inch of closing, bouncing back off the frame, traced to screw heads not sitting fully level on the hinge. The door hangs a fraction off, and that fraction shows up as a scrape at the bottom, a stuck latch, or a gap that mysteriously widens on one side. Interior hinges take a #8 or #9 size flat-head wood screw, and a slightly thicker screw like a #10 can sit too high in the dip and stop the door from closing right.

The two-minute fix that actually holds

Do this in order. Each step takes under a minute.

  1. Feel every screw head with your fingertip. Run a finger across each hinge screw. If any of them sits above the flat surface, or catches your nail, that one’s the problem.
  2. Back out any screw that’s sitting too high. Look at the head. If it’s the wrong shape or size for the little dip in the hinge, swap it. Interior hinges want a flat-head #8 or #9 wood screw. The originals that came with the door are usually right. A random screw from the junk drawer usually isn’t.
  3. If a screw just spins in the hole without tightening, the wood inside is chewed up. This Old House says to take the screw out, fill the hole with a sliver of wood dipped in wood glue, let it dry, then drive the screw back in. A wooden golf tee dipped in wood glue works too.
  4. Upgrade one screw per hinge to reach the wall stud. This is what makes the fix last. Replace one screw in the frame-side of the hinge with a #9 or #10 flat-head wood screw, 2 1/2 to 3 inches (about 6 to 7.5 cm) long. It goes past the door frame and bites into the solid wall stud behind it. For a droopy door, the top hinge matters most. Drill a thin starter hole first so nothing splits.
  5. Stop turning the moment the head sits level. Cranking harder just chews the hole up again.

Total cost is nothing, or a couple of dollars (a couple of euros) for the longer screws. Total time is about five minutes per door with a hand screwdriver. The reason your door has been annoying you for a year isn’t the door. It’s a screw head sitting a hair too high, and screws too short to reach the wood that actually matters. Fix those two things and the door goes quiet.
