Your range hood works but barely pulls any air: here’s what brings back its full power

You flip the range hood on high. The fan hums like always. But the steam from the pot just sits there. The garlic smell drifts across the whole house by morning. That yellow haze above the stove that used to clear out fast now hangs around like it owns the place.

Most people read those signs the same way. The motor must be dying. Time to price a new hood.

That reading is almost always wrong. The fan is fine. It’s still pulling as hard as the day you bought it. Something else went bad, and it costs about $0 and 15 minutes to fix.

Before we get to what it is, it helps to know why this matters. A weak hood isn’t just annoying while you cook. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says using your range hood can greatly reduce the tiny particles you breathe in from your stove, and recommends venting the air outside whenever possible. Washington State’s Department of Health puts it simpler: a fan that pushes air outside is critically important for clearing the harmful gases and particles cooking makes.

So when your hood stops actually pulling, you don’t just get a smelly kitchen. You breathe in more of what your stove throws off, and a sticky film starts building on everything within a few feet of the range.

The tell nobody talks about

If you want proof your hood has quit its day job, don’t look at the hood. Look at your kitchen.

Run a finger along the wall behind your stove. Feel a little tacky? Look up at the underside of the cabinet directly above the burners. See a yellow-brown tint on the wood or the paint? Check the ceiling right over your cooktop against a wall on the other side of the room. Does it look dingier?

That’s grease. Your hood was built to catch it and send it outside. Instead, it’s landing on your kitchen. That doesn’t happen when a hood is working. It only happens when the airway is blocked.

And this is the part that fools everybody. The fan sounds normal. It feels like it’s working. You can put your hand near the vent and feel some air moving. Just not much. Not enough to grab steam off a boiling pot. Not enough to pull smoke off a hot pan.

Most homeowners assume the motor is losing power the way an old ceiling fan does, slowly, over the years. So they either learn to live with it or start shopping for a replacement hood. Both are wrong. A range hood motor is a small, sealed workhorse. In most homes it will outlast the hood itself. If your hood is under 15 years old and the fan still spins at normal speed, the motor almost certainly isn’t the problem.

So if the motor is fine, the fan is spinning, and air still moves, what actually changed?

The real problem: something is choking the airway

Slide your hand up under the hood. You’ll feel a flat metal panel about the size of a paperback book, usually silver, with a fine crosshatch pattern like a screen door. Sometimes there are two side by side. That’s your grease filter. It has one quiet job: catch the airborne grease that flies up off your stove so it doesn’t clog your duct or gum up your motor.

For the first year or so, it does that job without anyone noticing. Then something changes.

Cooking grease isn’t like water. When oil gets hit with heat over and over, month after month, it slowly hardens. It goes from something you could wipe off with a paper towel into something more like sticky varnish. Give it enough time, and it fills in every tiny hole in that mesh. Your fan is still pulling with all its strength. It just can’t move air through a solid wall of dried oil.

That’s why your hood feels dead. The motor is fine. The airway is closed.

Manufacturers know this. Whirlpool’s own instructions say the grease filter on an over-the-range hood should be cleaned once a month. GE Appliances says the same for its range hood filters under normal use. Once a month. Not once a year. Not “when I remember.” Almost nobody actually does this, which is exactly why so many hoods lose suction after a couple of years for no obvious reason.

Good news: one soak fixes months of neglect. Better news: you already own everything you need.

The 15-minute fix

Three things have to work together to break through hardened cooking grease. Heat softens the dried oil. Baking soda turns some of the grease into something soap-like that rinses away. Dish soap grabs the rest and lifts it off. Warm water alone won’t do it. Regular dish soap alone won’t do it. All three together will.

Do this:

  1. Turn the hood off and let it cool. If you just cooked, give it five minutes. Never pull a filter while anything is hot.
  2. Pop the filter out. Almost every home filter has a small spring clip or a pull tab on one edge. Pull down, tilt, and it slides free. Do both if you have two.
  3. Fill your sink with the hottest tap water you can get. Boost it with a kettle of boiling water if the tap runs weak. You want it steaming.
  4. Add a quarter cup (about 60 g) of baking soda and a heavy squirt of a degreasing dish soap like Dawn. Stir until it fizzes a little. Slide the filter in fully underwater and leave it for 15 minutes. Don’t skip the soak. That’s where most of the work happens.
  5. Scrub gently with a soft brush or a non-scratch pad. Skip steel wool, which chews up aluminum. The grease should come off with almost no pressure, and the water will turn brown.
  6. Rinse under hot water until the mesh runs clear. Hold it up to a light. You should see straight through the holes.
  7. Dry it with a towel before snapping it back in. A wet filter can grow mildew and drip onto your burners.

Flip the hood back on high. The change is instant. Steam gets sucked straight up in seconds instead of drifting sideways. The hood isn’t new. It just remembered how to breathe.

A few things worth knowing

  • Skip the dishwasher on aluminum mesh. GE says the dishwasher works but often doesn’t get filters as clean as a hand soak, and dishwasher detergent can dull the aluminum over time. Stainless steel baffle filters (the heavier, thicker ones on nicer hoods) can go in the dishwasher. Regular aluminum mesh belongs in the sink.
  • If your hood recirculates air instead of venting outside, there’s a second filter you don’t wash. Whirlpool says the charcoal filter behind the mesh isn’t washable and should be replaced roughly every six months. Never soak it.
  • Once a month keeps you out of this hole. Every four to six weeks if you fry or sear a lot. Every two to three months for light cooking.
  • If a full soak doesn’t fix your suction, look further up. Check the outside vent flap on your house wall. It should flip open when the hood runs and close when it stops. Stuck flaps and duct gunk can also choke a hood.
