She refused to throw the old bed frame and used it to solve a garden problem it was never designed for

An unwanted bed frame can feel like a problem to remove rather than something worth keeping. It takes up space, needs dismantling and may require a collection just to leave the house. Meanwhile, a garden seating area that feels too exposed can prompt another purchase. Considering the two together gives an unwanted piece of furniture a chance to earn its space.

A project by TikTok creator @teawaoratrust shows how. It offers a reason to pause before arranging disposal, particularly if the furniture is structurally sound. Its appeal lies in combining a new outdoor purpose with a small shopping list.

The useful part is under the upholstery

The creator stripped an upholstered wooden bed base, stained the exposed framework and added a board shelf. Combined with an expandable trellis, it became a garden privacy screen with space for plants. This is the supporting foundation beneath a mattress, rather than the mattress itself or a conventional metal bed frame.

Once uncovered, its shape becomes easier to appreciate: a rectangular structure with repeated wooden supports. Turning it upright changes how those parts can work. The frame gives the screen its outline, while the spaces between the supports create opportunities for greenery and display. Measure the available space before committing to a bed base that overwhelms it.

That is the creative shift behind the project. Describing something as an old bed encourages a decision about keeping or discarding it. Looking at the timber and construction opens up other uses. Reusing the structure also keeps that part of the furniture out of the waste stream, even though the removed upholstery still needs dealing with.

Make the screen look as though it belongs

Start by checking the base for damage before removing its fabric, padding and staples. Wear gloves and eye protection while dismantling it, and pull out protruding fixings rather than concealing them beneath a finish. A frame with loose joints or broken supports needs repair before it can take on another job.

Prepare the exposed wood, remove sanding dust and choose a finish suitable for exterior use and the existing surface. Follow its instructions for coats and drying time. A stain close to the garden furniture or nearby fencing can help the reused frame sit comfortably within the setting. Fix the shelf board securely to a horizontal support before adding any pots.

The shelf gives the piece a purpose beyond screening. Keep the arrangement restrained: a few lightweight pots, repeated colors and space around each object will make the structure easier to read. Position heavier planters at ground level, where they can soften the base without loading the shelf. Avoid turning every opening into another place to store things.

Check the cost, support and position

The saving comes from reusing the largest component: the frame itself. The creator bought an expandable trellis and cable ties, but your shopping list may also include stain, a shelf board and suitable outdoor fixings. Check leftover supplies before shopping, and spend on secure construction before buying decorative extras.

Plan the support before adding plants. A bed base was designed to lie flat, so standing it upright outdoors requires secure anchoring appropriate to its height, weight and exposure to wind. Cable ties alone should not be treated as a universal solution. Choose the location and fixing method together.

Finally, check the sightline from the chair you actually use. An open frame and trellis can interrupt a view without providing complete privacy. Adjust the position before fastening it permanently, keeping a clear route around the patio seating area. The right spot matters more than filling every gap with decoration.

@teawaoratrust I made this for free 🔥😍🙌 bed bases are always theow out where i live, but they make beautiful, affordable privacy screen. The expandable trellis is from Kmart for $27. Cable ties from the warehouse $3 to secure. Happy upcycling 😇. #upcycle #divertingwaste #privacyscreen #kmarthack ♬ Backyard Boy – Claire Rosinkranz
