You pull the shirt off the hanger, still warm from the dryer. White, clean, ready to press before work. Halfway down the sleeve, a brown drop appears out of nowhere. Then another. You stop and look at the tank. It’s clear. You just filled it with fresh water a few days ago. So why is your iron spitting what looks like rust onto a shirt that was fine ten seconds ago?
Most people do the same thing next. They dump the tank. Refill with bottled water. Try again. Same brown speckles. Try distilled. Same speckles. By the third shirt, they’re convinced the iron is broken and start looking at replacements online.
But the water isn’t the problem. It never was. And a brand-new iron will start doing the exact same thing a few months from now, because the real cause has nothing to do with what’s inside the tank.

The quick test that proves it
Before you throw anything out, try this. Fill the tank with fresh distilled water, straight from a sealed jug. Heat the iron up. Then hold it over a plain white paper towel and press the steam button a few times.
If brown speckles still show up on the towel, the water is off the hook.
That test is your first real clue. According to Iowa State University Extension, brown marks on clothes almost never come from the water alone. They come from a slow buildup of stuff you never see, quietly cooking onto the iron over months of normal use. And Reader’s Digest adds the piece most people miss: the heat from the iron itself bakes that buildup in tighter every time you press a shirt. The longer you go without cleaning it, the darker and more stubborn the layer gets.
Why nobody catches it
Most people treat their iron like it takes care of itself. You empty the tank. Maybe you wipe the outside now and then. Done. The rest of the iron gets no attention because it’s hot metal that only touches clean laundry, so what could possibly go wrong?
That’s the exact thinking the problem hides behind.
Ironing feels like a clean job. You start with washed clothes, you use clean water, you finish with pressed shirts. So when brown marks appear, the water is the only visible suspect.
But something in that setup has been getting dirtier for months. Reader’s Digest points out that most people go one to two years without cleaning their iron at all, and by then the buildup is thick enough to show up on their shirts. Every iron manual talks about the water tank. Almost none of them tell you the part that matters more sits on the other side.
And it’s been there the whole time, hiding in plain sight, one spot that never gets wiped because it looks fine at a glance.
The spot to actually look at
Turn your iron over, cold and unplugged. Look at the flat metal bottom that touches your clothes, and the row of little holes running along it. That flat metal around the holes is the one part of the iron that picks up something new from every shirt you press.
Three things build up there.
- Spray starch and factory sizing. If you use spray starch, or press something brand new that still has that stiff feeling from the factory, a thin film transfers onto the hot metal. Missouri Star Quilt Co puts it plainly: the film turns tan, then brown, then sticky enough to grab tiny threads from the next shirt.
- Tiny fibers and lint. They melt onto the metal right around the little holes, where the wet steam holds them in place. Home Depot’s iron guide calls this the “black stuff” people notice on the bottom of an old iron.
- Minerals from every tank of tap water you’ve ever used. Even with clean water in the tank right now, months of old tap water have left a chalky layer inside the small channels underneath. That chalky layer sticks to the starch and lint film on the outside. When you press steam, the pressure pushes flakes of that mix out through the holes with the drops.
That mix is what lands on your shirt. Not rust. Not dirty water.
The five-minute fix
Iowa State Extension says to clean the bottom of the iron the moment it stops gliding smoothly or spits dirty water. This is how. Cold iron only. Unplugged. If it’s hot, the paste will dry instantly, smear the mess deeper into the holes, and burn your hand.
Do this:
- Mix a paste of baking soda and water. Two spoons of baking soda to one spoon of water, per Martha Stewart’s cleaning guide. Stir until it’s as thick as toothpaste.
- Spread the paste on the cold bottom with a soft cloth (microfiber works best). Focus on the ring around each little steam hole. Baking soda is soft enough not to scratch a nonstick or ceramic bottom, but rough enough to lift the burned-on layer.
- Let it sit for about a minute, then wipe in small circles.
- Wipe again with a clean, damp cloth. Get every bit of paste off, especially near the holes. Anything left inside will spit out on your next shirt.
- Clean the holes themselves with a cotton swab. Dip it in distilled water (or a bit of the paste for stubborn spots), spin it inside each hole, and pull it out. Repeat until the swab comes out clean.
- Fill the tank with distilled water and flush the inside. Turn the iron to the highest steam setting, hold it over an old dark towel, and press the steam blast button over and over for about 30 seconds. All the loose gunk in the channels comes out into the towel. A dark towel matters so you can actually see the brown flecks and know the flush worked.
- Empty the tank while the iron is still warm. Don’t store water inside.
Total cost: about a dollar (roughly one euro) for baking soda you already own.
What to skip
Don’t pour straight vinegar into the tank unless your manual says so. Braun’s official iron guide only uses vinegar on the outside of the metal, because it can eat away at parts inside some irons and cancel your warranty.
Don’t use steel wool, a knife, or any rough scrubbing pad. Missouri Star’s guide is blunt: one scratch on a nonstick or ceramic bottom is there forever, and it’ll snag fabric on every shirt after that.
Skip pure distilled water long-term if you own a Rowenta, Tefal, or Philips iron. Rowenta warns against 100% distilled water because it can make the iron spit and drip, and suggests a half-and-half mix with tap water instead. Philips says the same for hard-water areas. Distilled water is fine for the one-time flush above. For everyday use, follow what your brand recommends.
Don’t press over spray starch until the bottom is clean. You’ll bake a fresh layer onto whatever’s still there.
The habit that keeps it from coming back
After every ironing session, wipe the cool bottom with a slightly damp cloth. Ten seconds. Reader’s Digest calls this the single easiest habit for stopping brown gunk from forming. Empty the tank right after too. Water left inside overnight is where mold and chalky spots begin.
If you use spray starch, spray it onto the fabric and wait a few seconds before pressing. The starch soaks into the cloth, not the iron.
