My friend Sarah used to spend twenty minutes every Sunday standing at her ironing board. Shirts, work pants, pillowcases. She’d pull them out of the dryer, sigh, and plug in the iron. She figured that’s just what laundry day looks like.
Then one afternoon she showed me a shirt she’d just taken out of the machine. Smooth. Soft. Ready to hang in the closet. No iron needed. She said she hadn’t touched her iron in weeks.
I asked what she’d bought. A new dryer? A steamer? Some fancy setting she’d finally figured out?
She said no. She hadn’t spent a cent. She was using the same old dryer she’d owned for eight years. The only thing that changed was something she was doing wrong every single time she ran a load, and she didn’t even know it.
Once she stopped doing that one thing, the wrinkles disappeared. The damp spots in the towels disappeared. The second dryer cycles she used to run to finish drying stubborn stuff? Also gone.
Why so many of us have this problem
Here is the thing about dryers. Almost every American home owns one. We use them a couple times a week. And most of us have never really been taught how to run one properly. We just kind of figured it out.
The result is a routine you can see in almost any laundry room in the country. Wash finishes. Someone opens the washer, scoops out the whole wet pile in one big armful, and dumps it straight into the dryer. Pushes the door shut against the pile if they have to. Hits start.
It feels smart. One load in the washer, one load in the dryer. Nice and tidy. Two cycles would mean more time, more electricity, more standing around waiting. Who wants that?
That’s the trap Sarah was in for years. And the reason her shirts came out wrinkled every single Sunday isn’t what most people think. It’s not the dryer settings. It’s not the detergent. It’s not the fabric softener sheets she was using or not using.
She’d tried a lot of things over the years. She switched to the “wrinkle free” cycle. No luck. She tried more expensive dryer sheets. No luck. Lower heat. Higher heat. Timed dry versus auto dry. She even started shaking every shirt out before it went in. Still wrinkled.
The reason she couldn’t fix the problem is that she was trying to fix the wrong thing. The wrinkles, the damp towels, the second cycles she kept having to run, all of it was coming from the same source, and it had nothing to do with any button on the machine.
It’s what happens inside the drum when the load is wrong.
What’s actually going on inside your dryer
Think of your dryer less like an oven and more like a hair dryer aimed inside a rolling barrel. The heater warms up the air coming in. The drum spins so your clothes tumble through that warm air. And the wet air (now full of moisture from your clothes) gets pushed out the vent behind your machine to the outside of your house.
The whole thing only works if the clothes have room to fall. If they can’t fall, they can’t tumble. If they can’t tumble, only the outside of the pile ever touches the warm air. Everything in the middle just sits there, getting damp and wrinkled and baked into creases.
That’s what Sarah was doing wrong. She was stuffing the drum, every time.
Sloan Appliance Service, a repair company that fixes Whirlpool and Maytag machines every day, sees this problem in customer homes constantly. Their techs put it plainly: when the drum gets too full, “the dryer’s tumbling and airflow are restricted, and air won’t be able to reach every article of clothing.” What that means in real life, they say, is that “your dryer takes two cycles to dry instead of one, wasting time and energy.”
Maytag’s own official troubleshooting page for slow drying says the same thing: “Overloading restricts tumbling and airflow.” Whirlpool’s support page agrees: “If the load is too large and heavy, it will not dry quickly. Separate the load to tumble freely.”
So the shortcut people take to save time and energy is often costing them both. A standard electric dryer uses about 3 to 5 kilowatt-hours per cycle (around 0.60 to 1 USD, or 0.55 to 0.90 EUR / 0.45 to 0.75 GBP per load), and dryers eat about 75 to 85 percent of the electricity used for one laundry load, per data from SolarTechOnline. A second cycle to finish a stuffed load can quietly double that bill.
There’s one more cost most people never think about, and this one’s serious. The National Fire Protection Association’s most recent multi-year report found that U.S. fire departments answer about 15,970 house fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines every year, and dryers cause 92 percent of them. The number one reason is lint buildup. Stuffing the drum makes that worse, because a packed drum sheds more lint every cycle and forces the heater to run hotter for longer.
The one small change
Sarah’s fix, the thing that killed her ironing pile for good, is simple. Stop filling the drum all the way.
That’s the change. But “less full” is too vague to actually follow, so here’s what it looks like in practice.
- Aim for half to three-quarters full, no higher. This is the exact guidance on Maytag’s official troubleshooting page: “Aim for the drum to be about one-half to three-quarters full so items can tumble freely.” Whirlpool’s loading guide breaks it down the same way. A small load fills a quarter of the drum. A medium load fills half. A large load fills three-quarters. Above three-quarters is overloaded, full stop.
- Use the hand test. Before you hit start, look at the load. Could you lay your hand flat on top of the clothes with a few inches (about 8 to 10 cm) of space above? If yes, good. If the clothes are already pushing against the door glass, take some out and run two loads instead.
- Split heavy stuff in half. Towels, jeans, sweatshirts, sheets, and blankets weigh way more wet than dry, and hold a ton of water. A drum that looks half full of wet towels is often already a large load by weight. When in doubt, do two smaller loads.
- Take the clothes out the second the cycle stops. Wrinkles set in the last few minutes as clothes cool while pressed together. Pull them out warm, give them one shake, and hang or fold right away.
- Clean the lint screen every single load. Thirty seconds. Free. A blocked screen chokes airflow the same way overloading does, so even a proper load will run slow and hot if the screen is clogged.
Do these five things and something quietly great happens. The clothes actually tumble. Warm air reaches every piece. Moisture gets carried out. The cycle finishes when it says it will. And the shirts come out flat enough that you don’t need the iron.
