She’d been at it for years. Every deep-clean weekend, she went at the oven door with sprays, pastes, razor blades. The outside came up clean. The inside came up clean. And that ugly brown haze in the middle of the window, the one that made her preheat light look like a candle behind fog, never budged.
She tried the wire-hanger-with-a-cloth trick. She tried spraying vinegar through the little slots at the bottom of the door. She left baking soda paste on overnight. Nothing worked. And every time company came over and glanced at the oven, she felt that little pinch of embarrassment about a kitchen she otherwise kept spotless.
Then one Saturday, she watched someone spend less than half an hour on it, and the door looked brand new. Twenty minutes undid what years of scrubbing hadn’t. The reason no amount of scrubbing had ever worked is that she’d been cleaning the wrong two surfaces the whole time.

Why nothing you’ve tried has worked
If you own an oven, you’ve probably tried the same handful of things, and each one fails for a specific reason.
- The glass cleaner on the front. You spray, you wipe, the outside sparkles. You open the door, spray the inside, wipe again, the inside sparkles too. Close the oven, step back, and the haze is still there in the exact same shape it was before you started.
- The baking soda paste that works everywhere else. It works great on the walls inside your oven. On the door haze, it does nothing, no matter how long you leave it.
- The razor blade. A sharp blade scrapes off dried food splatters on the inside face of the door. It can’t touch the haze either.
- The wire-hanger hack that goes viral every year. You unwind a coat hanger, wrap the end in a soapy cloth, and try to feed it up through the narrow slots at the bottom of the door. If you’ve tried this, you already know what happens. The cloth only reaches a tiny strip near the opening, and most of the haze stays right where it was.
- The pro oven-cleaning service. People pay $150 or more for a technician who leaves the inside spotless, and the haze in the door still there, because standard cleanings don’t include taking the door apart.
- The self-clean cycle. According to KitchenAid, self-clean runs up to 800°F (427°C) and turns baked-on food inside the oven to ash. On the door glass, it can actually leave dark streaks behind. The film between the panes is protected by its own layer of glass, so that heat can’t reach it.
The reason all of these fail is the same reason. You haven’t been missing a technique. You’ve been trying to clean a surface you literally can’t touch.
Where the haze is actually hiding
Most oven doors aren’t one sheet of glass. According to the appliance parts supplier PartSelect, the inner glass panel on most ranges is a separate piece of tempered glass, about 18 to 20 inches wide (46 to 51 cm), sold on its own as a replacement part. The door is built with two panes of glass, sometimes three or four, stacked together with an air gap in between.
That air gap is why the door doesn’t burn your hand when a pizza is at 450°F (232°C) inside. It’s also the reason for the haze. Oven doors are vented on purpose, so heat and moisture from cooking can escape without cracking the glass. Family Handyman puts it plainly: baking splatter, grease, and steam end up stuck between the panes, and you can’t clean them off without opening up the door.
So when you scrub the front, you clean surface one. When you scrub the inside face, you clean surface two. The film you can see is on surfaces three and four, the two facing each other in the middle. Every product that promises to clean oven door glass cleans the sides you can already reach. The two you can’t reach have been quietly collecting a thin layer of cooking grease for as long as you’ve owned the oven.
That’s why the wire-hanger trick fails. That’s why the sprays fail. And that’s why the fix, once you know it, feels almost too obvious.
The manufacturer’s own answer
The part that surprises almost everyone: oven doors are built to come off. GE Appliances publishes step-by-step directions on its own support site for taking the door off and cleaning between the glass. This is the intended way to maintain most freestanding ranges and wall ovens, not a workaround.
Two exceptions matter. Some newer ovens have a small camera in the door for livestreaming your cooking. Some have side-swing doors. GE specifically says not to try this on either type, because taking those doors apart can damage the camera or the door itself. Check your owner’s manual first. If it has a section on removing the door, you’re clear. If it warns against it, or doesn’t mention it at all, call the service line before touching anything.
The 20-minute walkthrough
- Let the oven cool and cut the power. The oven has to be fully cool. For electric, unplug it or flip the breaker. For gas, turn off the gas valve.
- Lock the door hinges open. Open the door all the way. At the two bottom corners of the door opening, you’ll see a small metal tab on each hinge. Flip both tabs up toward the oven. This locks the hinges so they can’t snap shut on your fingers.
- Take the door off. Close the door partway, about 3 inches (7.5 cm) from fully closed. Grip both sides at the top, lift straight up until the door lifts free, and pull it toward you. Set it flat on a folded towel, handle side down. Expect 15 to 30 pounds (7 to 14 kg). For a wall oven, get a second person to help.
- Snap a phone photo of the back of the door before you remove any screws. You’ll thank yourself when it’s time to put it back together.
- Take out the trim and inner glass. Unscrew the trim or brackets holding the top and bottom edges of the door. Stick each screw to a piece of masking tape and label where it came from. Lift the inner glass out slowly. The edges of tempered glass chip easily, and a replacement pane runs $60 to $200 depending on your model.
- Clean both hidden sides. Wipe both sides of the inner glass, and the back side of the outer glass, with warm soapy water on a soft microfiber cloth. For baked-on residue, a baking soda paste sits for 15 minutes, then wipes right off. Rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Skip anything scratchy, which can permanently mark tempered glass.
- Put it back together in reverse. Wear thin gloves so you don’t leave fingerprints on the clean glass. Drop the inner pane back into its slots, screw the trim back on to match your photo, lift the door onto the hinges at the same angle you took it off, open the door all the way, and flip both hinge tabs back down.
Total cost: $0 if you already own a Phillips screwdriver. Total time: under an hour the first time, closer to 20 minutes the second.
Next time you preheat, the light will look like a light instead of a smudge. The reason it stayed cloudy for years wasn’t that you weren’t scrubbing hard enough. It’s that the surface that needed cleaning had a whole layer of glass in front of it, and nobody ever told you the layer comes out.
