You stop every few feet to re-thread your trimmer, here’s the $10 fix that most yards never need again

You pull the trimmer out of the garage on a Saturday morning with a plan to knock the yard out in an hour. You fire it up, work along the fence for maybe thirty seconds, and snap. The line’s gone. You shut it off, flip the trimmer upside down, wrestle the spool cover open, feed a fresh length through the eyelet, snap the cover back on, restart, and get maybe another twenty feet before the whole thing happens again.

By the third round, you’re pretty sure the trimmer is defective, the brand is junk, or the yard is out to get you. So you Google whether it’s worth buying a new trimmer. You watch a couple of videos about auto-feed heads. You wonder if you should just spring for a gas model, or a battery model, or a bigger model.

Meanwhile the weeds along the fence line are still standing there. Untouched.

If any of that sounds familiar, take a breath before you spend a few hundred dollars on a new machine. It’s almost never the trimmer. In fact, the same machine you’re about to trash can probably rip through everything in your yard in one pass, without a single stop, for the price of a small spool from the hardware store and a bucket of tap water sitting in your garage overnight.

The reason it feels broken has almost nothing to do with the motor, the brand, or the head. And once you know what’s actually going on down there at the spinning end, you’ll never accept mid-job breakage as normal again.

The part almost nobody thinks about

That thin nylon string spinning around at the end of your trimmer isn’t one generic product. It comes in different thicknesses (called diameters, or “gauges”), different shapes (round, square, twisted, serrated), and different quality grades. Each one is built for a very specific type of job, and a mismatch is why most yards look like a warzone by the third pass.

Most homeowners grab whatever spool is cheapest at the hardware store, which is almost always thin, round, standard-grade nylon. That kind of line is designed for light, tidy grass on a maintained lawn. When you push it into tall weeds, woody stalks, a chain-link fence, or a concrete curb, it doesn’t cut. It shatters.

Trade publication Family Handyman puts it plainly in its string trimmer line guide: round line is easy to feed and widely available, but it lacks a real cutting edge and tends to tear grass rather than slice it. Anything tougher than a manicured lawn calls for a different shape and often a heavier gauge.

And there’s a second thing going on that even lawn-care pros overlooked for years. Nylon dries out on the shelf.

Nylon is basically a sponge

This part surprises almost everyone. Nylon is what scientists call hygroscopic, which is a fancy way of saying it absorbs and releases moisture from the air around it, sort of like a sponge.

When a spool of trimmer line sits in a warm garage, a hot shed, or on a store shelf for a season or two, it slowly loses that moisture. As it dries, it stops flexing. It gets stiff. It gets brittle. And the moment you spin it at a few thousand RPM and slam it into a fence post, it doesn’t bend and rebound. It just cracks and snaps off.

STIHL, one of the biggest names in outdoor power equipment, spelled this out directly. In a statement republished by STIHL PROLINE and confirmed by STIHL USA’s customer team, the company explains that nylon stored in dry conditions “can lose its moisture and therefore its flexibility, it can become stiff, brittle, and break easily.

Oregon, the other giant in the trimmer line world, says the same thing on its own product information. Any monofilament trimmer line, Oregon notes, can lose moisture over time or become brittle, especially if it’s been sitting in heat or sunlight. Oregon’s own recommendation is to submerge the line in water for 24 hours before use.

So there are two problems working against you at once. Wrong line shape or size for what you’re cutting, plus a line that’s been drying out so long that even the right shape would crack under pressure. Fix both, and the trimmer you were about to throw away suddenly works like a different machine.

The fix, in two cheap parts

Part one: match the line to what you’re actually cutting.

Pull out your trimmer’s manual or search the model number online, and find the maximum line diameter it can handle. Do not go bigger than that number. Too-thick line strains the motor, overheats the head, and jams the feed, according to parts specialist MowTownUSA and every manufacturer manual.

Working inside your trimmer’s approved range, here’s the everyday guide, consistent across Family Handyman, Sears Parts Direct, and industry sizing charts:

  • 0.065″ to 0.080″ for light grass and edging. Most cordless and electric trimmers.
  • 0.080″ to 0.095″ for standard residential lawns with medium weeds. The sweet spot for most gas homeowners.
  • 0.095″ to 0.105″ for thick grass, dense weeds, and overgrown patches.
  • 0.105″ and up for heavy brush. Bigger gas trimmers only.

Then pick the shape that matches your job. Round for well-kept lawns and anywhere the line hits concrete, brick, or trees. It lasts longest against hard surfaces. Twisted for a middle ground: better cutting than round, quieter than square, holds up decently near curbs. Most lawn-care pros run twisted for daily work. Square, serrated, or multi-sided for thick weeds and overgrowth, where the sharp edges slice cleanly.

A spool of the right line runs about $10 to $15. Look for “commercial grade,” “anti-weld,” or “reinforced” on the package.

Part two: soak the line before you spool it.

This one is free. Drop your fresh spool, or the pre-cut lengths you plan to load, into a bucket of room-temperature water. Leave it for 24 hours. That’s the number both Oregon and STIHL specifically recommend. Then pat it dry and spool it up. The absorbed water acts like a plasticizer inside the nylon, so the line flexes and rebounds instead of shattering.

One catch: soaking prevents brittleness and revives line that’s just gotten stiff. It won’t rescue line that’s already cracked or splintered. Once nylon has dried past a certain point, Lawn Mower Guru’s hands-on test found, no amount of soaking brings it back. If your current spool looks chalky or crumbly when you flex it, throw it out and start fresh.

Two habits to quit while you’re at it

  • Don’t jam the head into the weeds. Sweep it through side-to-side. When you plow straight in, airflow gets cut off, heat builds fast, and the line can fuse to itself inside the spool. Sears Parts Direct calls this “welding.”
  • Ease off the throttle near hard surfaces. Running full-speed into a chain-link fence or concrete curb shatters line, hydrated or not. Chain-link is uniquely brutal, and no line at any price survives it.

You didn’t buy a bad trimmer. You’ve been feeding a light-duty line into a heavy-duty job, using a spool that’s been turning to plastic straw in the garage. Ten bucks and a bucket of water fixes the whole thing.
