Warning: these houseplants in your home could be polluting your indoor air, not cleaning it

You bought them to breathe easier. A pothos by the desk. A little fig tree in the bedroom corner. Maybe a peace lily on the kitchen counter. Everyone says houseplants “clean the air,” so more plants must mean cleaner air, right?

Not quite. Your houseplants aren’t cleaning your indoor air in any real way. And one very common one is quietly making a specific air problem in your home worse. Most people who own it have no idea.

Good news: you don’t have to throw anything out. But you probably need to change what you’re doing with a few of them, starting this week.

Where the “plants clean your air” idea actually came from

Almost every “houseplants purify the air” article you’ve ever read traces back to one study. Back in 1989, a NASA scientist named B.C. Wolverton looked at whether houseplants could pull toxic chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene out of the air on a sealed space station. Certain plants did pull some of it out. Real science.

What got lost in translation? The tests happened inside small, sealed glass boxes about the size of a closet, with no windows, no fresh air moving through, and pollution levels pumped up way higher than any normal home. Your living room is nothing like that.

In 2019, two researchers at Drexel University, Bryan Cummings and Michael Waring, looked back at 12 of these plant studies and ran the numbers again in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology. Their conclusion was blunt: in a normal home, the fresh air coming through your heating and cooling system and the odd open window pulls pollutants out hundreds of times faster than plants ever could.

To actually get the air-cleaning effect people think they’re getting, you’d need somewhere between 10 and 1,000 plants per square meter (about 11 square feet) of floor space. For a 1,500-square-foot house (about 140 square meters), that’s roughly 680 plants. Waring told reporters a regular HEPA air purifier is about 5,000 times better than a houseplant at cleaning your indoor air.

The American Lung Association put it plainly: “The verdict is now in: houseplants do not improve air quality.”

So plants are just neutral, then? Not quite

Plants aren’t just failing to clean the air. In a few common situations, they can quietly add to problems already floating around your home. Two everyday reasons, and one much bigger one most people never hear about.

  • Everyday reason one: mold. Wet potting soil is a perfect spot for mold to grow, according to the American Lung Association. If you can see white or gray fuzz on the top of the soil, that’s mold, and bumping the dirt when you water pushes those tiny bits into the air you breathe. Same reason a wet basement smells musty.
  • Everyday reason two: fungus gnats. Those tiny black flies that appear around your plants aren’t a random pest. Extension services at the University of Minnesota, University of California, University of Georgia, and Oregon State all point to the same cause: they lay their eggs in the top half inch (about 1 cm) of wet potting soil. Wet soil equals a gnat nursery on your bookshelf.

None of that is a disaster for a healthy adult with a couple of well-cared-for plants. But if you keep a small indoor jungle and half those pots get watered too often, you’re steadily adding mold bits and bugs to the air where you sleep. For someone with asthma or a kid with allergies, that stops being harmless fast.

The bigger half of the story? One specific plant scientists have actually studied, sitting in millions of American living rooms.

The one nobody warns you about

You’ve almost certainly seen it. A small indoor tree, three to six feet tall (about 1 to 2 meters), slim trunk (often braided), hundreds of small, glossy, oval-shaped leaves. Big-box garden centers and Home Depot stock it year-round as a “starter tree.” Many owners don’t even know its name.

It’s the weeping fig (scientific name Ficus benjamina, in case you want to Google it).

Why it’s a problem isn’t a wellness-blog scare, it’s real medical research. A 1995 study in the medical journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy by Dr. Andreas Bircher’s team found that proteins in weeping fig sap don’t stay in the plant. They push out onto the leaves and stick to the dust in your home. Bircher’s team found them in dust wiped off the leaves and in dust on the floor of rooms where the plant sat.

So every time you dust, vacuum, or walk past your weeping fig, allergy-triggering bits get stirred right back into the air you breathe. In German allergy clinics, the weeping fig ranks as the third most common allergy trigger inside people’s homes, behind only dust mites and pet dander.

What to actually do (keep your plants, fix the problem)

Try this short list:

  • If you own a weeping fig and anyone in your home has year-round allergies you can’t explain, asthma, or a latex allergy, replace it. This is the one plant worth swapping out. Good low-allergy substitutes: snake plant, ZZ plant, pothos, philodendron. (The American Lung Association also flags ferns, yuccas, male palms, African violets, orchids, and mums as common triggers.)
  • Wipe every big, shiny leaf with a damp (not dry) cloth every 2 to 4 weeks. A dry cloth just puts the dust back into the air. A damp cloth traps it.
  • Let the top 1 to 2 inches (about 2.5 to 5 cm) of soil dry out fully between waterings. Every major U.S. extension service says this is the single biggest thing you can do to shut down both mold and fungus gnats. Stick your finger in past the first knuckle. Dry means water.
  • Never leave standing water in the saucer under the pot. Empty it out.
  • Cover the top of the soil with a thin layer of coarse sand, small pebbles, or garden grit (about a quarter inch, or half a centimeter). Makes it harder for gnats to lay eggs, and cuts down on mold bits floating up when the dirt gets bumped around.

And keep them, by the way. A big review at the University of Birmingham looking at 42 studies, plus research from the University of Reading, both show being around plants makes people feel calmer. That’s a real reason to have them. Just not the reason you thought.

Signs your plants are part of the problem

Not sure whether your plants are actually affecting the air in your home? A few clues to look for:

  • Allergy symptoms that get better when you leave the house (and come back within a few hours of returning) point to something indoors.
  • Symptoms that are worst in the room with the most plants, especially the bedroom.
  • Visible fuzz on the soil, a musty smell in the room, or tiny black flies drifting near the pots.
  • Dust that builds up faster than it used to, especially on and around your weeping fig.

None of those on their own prove anything. But if you tick two or more, the fix list above is worth a real try before you spend money on an air purifier or an allergist visit.
