You clean the bathroom every week. You wipe down the shower. You spray the grout. You run the fan every single time you shower. And within a few days, the black specks are back around the ceiling corners. The paint bubbles near the top of the wall. The window trim feels damp when you touch it.
You start to think the bathroom is just doomed. Maybe it’s the age of the house. Maybe the weather where you live. Maybe you’d have to rip out the drywall to fix it.

Almost none of that is true. The mold keeps coming back for one very specific reason, and it has nothing to do with how often you clean. It’s something you probably do every day without thinking, and it cancels out the one thing in your bathroom that was built to stop this exact problem.
Why cleaning harder never wins
Most people fight bathroom mold with cleaners. A stronger spray. A different brand. A monthly scrub with vinegar or bleach. It works for a week, and then the specks come back in the same corners.
Cleaning alone never wins because mold isn’t a dirt problem. It’s a wet problem. You can wipe every surface you can see and it’ll still come back, because you never fixed the reason the air stayed wet.
The fan on your ceiling was supposed to handle that. Its whole job is to pull the wet air out fast enough that your walls, ceiling, and corners don’t have time to grow anything. Most people already run their fan during every shower, and it still isn’t enough.
A 30-second test that tells you what’s really going on
Try this before reading further. It’s the check home inspectors use, and ABC News covered it as the easiest at-home version.
- Turn the fan on.
- Tear off a single square of toilet paper.
- Hold it flat against the fan cover.
If the fan holds the square up on its own, your fan is pulling real air. If the square falls off, or barely holds, your fan is basically decoration. It’s spinning. It’s making noise. It’s using electricity. And it’s moving almost no air out of the room.
Most people never check this. They just hear the humming and assume the room is being cleared out. It usually isn’t.
The theories you’ve probably already ruled out
You’ve probably wondered if the mold is coming from the shower head. From the duct in the attic. The flashing on the roof. A slow leak behind the wall.
For most bathrooms, none of that is the cause. The real reason is much closer, much simpler, and much cheaper to fix. It’s happening two feet (about 60 cm) above your head, every time you shower.
The mistake almost everyone makes
This is the pattern behind the recurring mold, the peeling paint, the damp trim, and the mirror that never seems to clear.
The mistake isn’t running the fan too little, or buying the wrong model. The mistake is that your fan has been quietly suffocating for months, maybe years, and you couldn’t tell because it kept spinning and humming right through it. Fine Homebuilding, one of the most trusted home-building publications around, put a number on it: a fan labeled to move 50 cubic feet of air per minute (about 85 m³/h) might actually be moving only 25 in a real bathroom. That’s half. And it happens because two things are choking it at the same time.
Choke point one: the grille itself
Look up at your fan cover. That plastic grille with the little slots? Over months and years, it collects a thick mat of household dust, hair, and skin cells from every shower. It’s finer and stickier than dryer lint, and it clings to the plastic because the wet air keeps it damp.
Once that mat builds up, air can’t get through the slots at the same rate. Today’s Homeowner and This Old House both call this the number one reason a fan “runs but doesn’t work.” The motor keeps spinning. The blades keep turning. But the air has nowhere to go, so most of it gets pushed around inside the housing.
Choke point two: the closed door
This one is the bigger problem, and almost nobody thinks about it.
When you shut the bathroom door tight during a shower, you seal the room. The fan is trying to pull air out, but for every bit of air it removes, the same amount of fresh air has to come in from somewhere to replace it. If there’s no way for that fresh air to get in, the fan is fighting a vacuum. It spins, but the room stays wet.
Builders call this “make-up air” (the fresh air that flows in to replace what got sucked out). The Home Ventilating Institute, the group that sets airflow rules for these fans, is direct: bathroom doors need a gap under them so fresh air can flow in. Without that gap, your fan moves way less air than the label says.
A dusty grille and a sealed door are the same mistake, working together. Once the humidity in a room stays above 60 percent, the EPA says mold starts growing on paint, drywall, wood, and grout. Your bathroom crosses that line every shower, and the fan you thought was solving it has barely been moving air.
The fix, in 15 minutes and for under $10 (about €9)
Both parts get fixed the same day. Neither one needs a contractor.
Step 1. Clean the grille.
- Flip the fan switch off.
- Grip the cover and pull straight down. Most covers are held by two spring clips. Squeeze them together and the cover pops free.
- Wash it in the sink with warm water and dish soap. A soft brush knocks the dust out of the slots.
- Let it fully air-dry before putting it back.
Step 2. Vacuum inside the fan.
- With the cover off, use a vacuum with the brush attachment to clean the fan blades and inside the housing. Family Handyman says do this every 6 months.
Step 3. Give the fresh air a way in.
- Easiest option: leave the bathroom door open a few inches while you shower. That alone solves the airflow problem.
- If the door has to stay shut, check the gap under it. You want at least 3/4 of an inch (about 2 cm) of clear space between the bottom of the door and the floor. Green Building Advisor’s engineering guidance: a 1-inch (about 2.5 cm) gap under a standard 30-inch (76 cm) door lets in enough fresh air for a typical bathroom fan.
- If your gap is less, most doors can be trimmed with a circular saw. A handyman will do it for under $50 (about €45).
Step 4. Run the fan for a full 20 minutes after every shower.
- Not five. Not “until I leave the bathroom.” Twenty. That’s the Home Ventilating Institute number, and it’s what drops the humidity back below the 60 percent mold line. A plug-in timer switch, around $15 (about €14), handles it automatically.
