You throw in a load of laundry on a cold, wet day, and drape it over the drying rack in the living room or bedroom. The heat’s on. The windows are shut against the cold. By morning the clothes are almost dry, the house smells a little damp, and there’s a slick of water beading down the inside of the windows.
That damp smell isn’t nothing. And those water beads aren’t just condensation to wipe off. They’re the first sign of a slow-moving problem most Americans have no idea they’re causing every time they air-dry a load indoors.
If you own a drying rack, or you hang delicates and workout gear to dry, this is almost certainly happening in your home right now. The fix costs zero dollars, takes ten seconds, and works on your next load.

The setup that quietly breaks things
Think about how you dry a load without the dryer.
Wet clothes come out of the washer still holding a lot of water, even after a full spin. The rack goes wherever there’s floor space, usually the bedroom, living room, or hallway. The door stays open so the room “doesn’t get stuffy.” The window stays shut because heat costs money. The clothes dry over the next 12 to 24 hours.
That whole time, the water in those clothes has to go somewhere. It doesn’t disappear. It goes straight into the air of your home.
A 2025 study in the journal Building and Environment measured this directly. Researchers weighed a normal cotton load before and after air-drying inside a test room. The result: about 2 liters of water (half a US gallon, or 4 pints) came off one load and went into the air. In the first two hours, water was pouring off the clothes at up to 360 grams an hour, roughly 3 cups an hour. A small humidifier running at full blast, except you didn’t plug it in and you can’t turn it off.
A three-year study by the Mackintosh Environmental Architecture Research Unit at the Glasgow School of Art looked at real homes doing this. What they found: 87 percent of households were drying laundry indoors in colder months, and 75 percent of those homes had enough moisture in the air to grow mold. Most were drying in bedrooms and living rooms, the two worst rooms for it.
Why the windows go first
Warm air holds a lot of moisture. Cold air can’t. So the second warm damp air from your drying clothes touches a cold surface, the moisture drops out and lands on whatever is coldest in the room.
In almost every American home in winter, the coldest surface is the inside of the window and the frame around it. That’s why water beads show up on the glass first. And it’s why the little black speck you sometimes see in the corner of a window frame, on the caulk line, or on the paint isn’t dirt at all. It’s a mold colony just getting started.
The US Environmental Protection Agency is very clear about the number that matters. Its Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture, and Your Home says to keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. Go past 60 percent for long enough, and mold has what it needs to grow on paint, drywall, wood, and caulk. The EPA also calls out water on your windows as a warning sign of too much moisture in the air.
Most homes sit around 45 to 55 percent humidity in winter, which is fine. Add a drying rack pouring 2 liters of water into the air, with the door open so it spreads and the window shut so it can’t leave, and that room can shoot past 70 percent for hours. Do that twice a week all winter, and the paint around your windows starts to give up.
So here’s the real problem, in one line. The habit that feels smart and eco-friendly, drying clothes on a rack instead of running the dryer, turns into a mold-and-paint-damage problem the moment you do it the way almost everyone does it: any room, door open, window shut.
And no, it isn’t a “free humidifier”
There’s a popular idea that drying clothes on a rack is a “free winter humidifier” that adds nice moisture to dry indoor air. For the way most Americans live, this is almost completely wrong.
That “free humidifier” idea only holds up in very dry desert climates, where indoor humidity is stuck below 25 or 30 percent. In most of the country, in most homes, winter humidity is already in a healthy range or higher. Adding 2 liters of water from a drying rack doesn’t top off a low tank. It overflows one that was already close to full.
The fix, and why it’s free
The fix is one small change to where and how you set up the rack. Not what you dry, not how much you dry, not how often.
Put the drying rack in one room. Close the door. Crack the window about two inches, or run a fan. That’s the whole thing.
The Energy Saving Trust, a UK non-profit that focuses on home moisture and energy, recommends this exact setup. The reason is simple. The closed door keeps the water in one room instead of letting it spread to every cold surface in your house. The cracked window (yes, even two inches, yes, even in cold weather) or a running fan gives that water a way out, so it goes outside instead of soaking into your walls, ceiling, and window frames.
Bonus: your clothes actually dry faster this way. Still air around a wet rack gets soaked with water fast, and drying slows way down. Moving air pulls the water off much quicker.
Run this checklist on your next load.
Do this:
- Pick one room, the smaller the better. Bathroom, laundry room, spare bedroom, or mudroom all work.
- Move the drying rack into that room. Space the clothes out so they aren’t touching, so air can move between them.
- Close the door. This is the step almost everyone skips.
- Crack the window about two inches (5 cm). That’s enough, even when it’s cold out. You’ll lose a tiny bit of heat, but fixing mold costs a lot more than that.
- No window in that room? Run the bathroom vent fan, or point a small floor fan or box fan at the rack. Moving air is what matters.
- Take the dry clothes out within an hour of them being ready. A closed room full of damp air keeps the problem going.
Don’t do this:
- Don’t drape wet clothes on radiators or baseboard heaters. That pushes even more water into the air, even faster.
- Don’t dry clothes in the bedroom you sleep in. Eight hours of sleep next to a wet rack pushes bedroom humidity into the mold zone all night.
- Don’t leave the door open “so the moisture spreads out.” Spreading it out is exactly how it lands on every cold surface in your house.
