You hear it before you see it. A hiss, or a slow drip, or the sound of water running when nothing’s turned on. You follow it and find a small crack, a loose fitting, a pinhole spray on a copper line.
Small problem, right? You’ve seen worse on YouTube.
Then you try to stop the water. And you can’t.

That’s when a small leak becomes a big mess. Not because the pipe was expensive. Not because you didn’t act fast. Because the one thing that was supposed to save you didn’t work, and by the time you figured that out, water had been running for twenty, thirty, sixty minutes into your floors, walls, and ceiling.
How fast a “small” leak actually gets big
Most people badly underestimate the flow rate coming out of even a modest household pipe. A half-inch supply line, the standard size feeding sinks, toilets, and washing machines in most American homes, can push about 10 gallons (38 liters) of water per minute into your home when it breaks open.
That’s 600 gallons an hour. That’s a full bathtub in less than five minutes. Larger lines push more.
By the time you’ve gone upstairs to grab towels and call someone, hundreds of gallons have spread. Water reaches drywall in about 15 minutes. It gets into subfloors in under an hour. It sits in insulation for weeks and grows mold.
The pipe repair itself is cheap. Most burst pipe repairs run $200 to $1,000, with $500 being typical, according to home services platform HomeAdvisor.
The water damage is where the real money goes. Water damage from burst pipes and supply line failures is the second most common homeowner insurance claim in the United States, averaging around $12,500 per incident, according to the Insurance Information Institute. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, an independent research organization funded by insurers, ranks water supply line failures among the top five sources of residential water damage claims, and notes that most of the damage happens in the first few minutes before the water gets stopped.
The math is brutal, but simple. A leak stopped in 60 seconds is a $200 pipe repair. A leak that runs for 30 minutes is a $12,000 insurance claim. A leak that runs for two hours because nothing could stop it is gutted floors, ruined cabinets, weeks in a hotel, and a claim that can push past $50,000.
The part of the equation nobody checks
Every homeowner safety checklist in the country tells you the same first step during a leak: stop the water. Insurance blogs say it. Your realtor’s move-in packet said it. Consumer Reports emergency guidance says it in the exact same words.
So that’s what everyone plans to do.
But here’s what almost nobody tests: whether the thing you’re planning to use in that emergency actually works when you try.
You don’t test your fire extinguisher every year. You don’t test your smoke alarm every month. You especially don’t test the piece of plumbing you assume was installed correctly and has been sitting there quietly ever since. It looks fine. It’s just… there. Waiting.
Insurance companies know what happens next. IBHS guidance notes that homeowner neglect can affect what a policy covers, and while insurers usually pay burst pipe damage claims, the size of the payout, and how much comes out of your own pocket in deductibles and coverage gaps, depends almost entirely on how fast you got the water off. You don’t control when a pipe fails. You only control what happens in the next sixty seconds.
Here’s what those sixty seconds actually look like. You find the leak. You feel that moment of calm-panic. You go straight to where you know you’re supposed to go. You grab the handle. You start turning.
Then the story goes one of two ways.
If everything works the way you assumed it would, the flow drops off within about a minute, you throw down towels, and by the weekend it’s a story you tell at dinner.
If it doesn’t, you stand there turning something that won’t turn, listening to your house fill up with water, and by the weekend you’re moving into a hotel while restoration crews rip out your floors.
The difference between those two stories isn’t the leak. It isn’t the pipe. It’s one specific piece of hardware most homes have quietly stopped being able to rely on, without anyone noticing.
The piece of your plumbing that fails silently
The piece nobody thinks to inspect is the main water shutoff valve itself, the round wheel-handle valve (a gate valve) or lever-handle valve (a ball valve) where the water supply enters your house, usually in the basement, garage, or a utility closet near the water heater.
It fails quietly, in the open position, without telling you. When valves sit for years, mineral deposits build up on the stem threads and the seat where the valve closes, and the metal parts slowly corrode and bond together. Valve manufacturer TOT Valve describes this as the stem and gate “bonding together” over years of inactivity.
When you try to turn it in an emergency, best case it’s stiff. Worst case, the internal stem snaps under force and the handle spins uselessly while water keeps flowing. Sometimes the valve even looks like it worked, but the corroded internals no longer seal.
The fix costs nothing and takes two minutes, twice a year
The prevention plumbers and water utilities have quietly used for decades is called exercising the valve. You turn it fully closed, then fully back open, so the internal parts keep moving and can’t fuse. Leesburg, Virginia runs an annual valve-exercising program on its mains. Roto-Rooter recommends homeowners do the same “a couple times a year.” The cadence licensed plumbers converge on: twice per year, fully closed and fully back open.
Do it like this:
- Pick two dates you’ll remember. The daylight-saving-time clock changes work well, same prompt as “check your smoke alarm.”
- Close the valve fully. On a gate valve (round wheel), turn clockwise slowly, five to ten full turns until it stops firmly. On a ball valve (lever), turn the handle a quarter turn perpendicular to the pipe.
- Confirm it actually shut off. Turn on the nearest cold tap. Water should slow to a trickle and stop. If it keeps running strong, the valve isn’t sealing and needs replacement now, not during an emergency.
- Turn it fully back open. Slowly, same number of turns in reverse. A sudden reopen can water-hammer old joints.
- Never force it. If it resists hard, stop. Apply a penetrating oil like PB Blaster or WD-40 Specialist to the stem, wait 20 to 30 minutes, try gently again. If it still won’t move, call a plumber. Forcing a stuck valve is how the stem snaps.
If the valve is over 20 years old, a gate valve, or visibly corroded, have a plumber swap it for a modern quarter-turn ball valve, which is easier to operate in a panic and far less prone to seizing.
