She skips a dishwasher step everyone trusts, and it’s why her glasses always come out crystal-clear

Two neighbors buy the same set of wine glasses. Same box, same day. Both wash them in the dishwasher a few times a week for five years.

By year five, one neighbor’s glasses look almost brand new. The other’s have gone dull. Not dirty. Not spotted. Just dull, in a way no scrub, soak, or spray will ever fix.

Same glasses. Same dishwasher brand. Same tap water. So what happened?

It isn’t luck. One neighbor quietly stopped doing something the other one still does on every load, without thinking twice. And once you hear what it is, you’ll probably realize you’ve been doing it too.

Not all cloudy glasses are the same

This is the part most people never learn: there are actually two totally different kinds of cloudy glass, and only one of them can be saved.

The first kind is a chalky film left behind by hard water. Wipe it with a little white vinegar and it lifts right off. The glass underneath is completely fine.

The second kind is called etching. And according to glassware brand Libbey, once a glass is etched, there’s no way to bring it back. Not vinegar. Not baking soda. Not Bar Keepers Friend. Not any polish sold in any store. The surface of the glass itself has been eaten away in tiny amounts, so light hits it differently. Hold an etched glass up at an angle and you’ll sometimes catch faint shades of blue, purple, or pink shimmering across it. That isn’t a film on top. That’s the glass itself, and it’s ruined.

Which kind do you have? Try this test. Put a drop of white vinegar on the cloudy spot of a dry glass and wait 30 seconds. If the cloudiness lightens or disappears, it’s just hard water film and your glass is fine. Wipe it off and it’ll look new again.

If nothing changes? That glass is etched. Ruined. And every load you run right now is doing the same thing to the glasses sitting next to it in the cabinet.

Which brings up the uncomfortable question almost nobody asks. If your glasses turned out to be the etched kind, what’s actually causing it? What’s the one thing your neighbor stopped doing that saved hers?

Most people would guess hard water. It leaves marks on everything, spots on the shower door, ring around the sink, chalky film on the faucet. It feels like the obvious answer. So the story goes: hard water hits the glass, hard water eats the glass, buy a water softener, problem solved.

Every part of that story is wrong. And the last part, the softener, is what actually makes things worse.

The real reason your glasses turn cloudy is sitting inside your dishwasher right now, working silently on every load. It’s a combination of three ordinary things you’d never think twice about. Each one on its own is fine. Together, they’re quietly eating your glassware. And the fix, once you see it, is almost embarrassingly cheap.

The real culprit is the opposite of what you think

Soft water is what quietly wrecks your glassware. Not hard water.

That sounds backwards, but every major appliance and glassware brand agrees on it. Hard water has minerals in it (calcium and magnesium) that basically act like a sponge. When your dishwasher detergent goes to work, those minerals soak up most of the harsh stuff before it goes anywhere else. You get some spots to wipe off, sure. But your glass stays safe underneath.

Soft water has almost none of those minerals. So the same detergent at high heat has nothing to soak it up. It goes looking for the next thing to react with. What it finds is your glassware.

GE Appliances puts it plainly: too much detergent in a soft-water home leads to a build-up of harsh chemicals that attack the glass. Libbey says the same thing: soft water naturally causes etching. That covers naturally soft water (common in the Pacific Northwest and parts of New England) and hard water that’s been run through a whole-house softener.

So if you put in a softener a while back and your glasses started clouding up months later? Not a coincidence. The softener didn’t cause the damage. It removed the one thing protecting your glasses from your detergent.

Heat makes it worse. According to Water Technology, keeping wash water below 140°F (60°C) is one of the biggest things you can do to slow etching. So heated dry, sanitize cycles, high-temp washes? All of them speed the damage up.

And there’s one last thing almost nobody warns you about.

Rinse aid. Most people treat it as a “nice to have,” something you can skip if you don’t mind a few water spots. But according to Consumer Reports, every single dishwasher brand recommends using it. It breaks the bond between water and your dishes so the water slides right off instead of clinging in little drops. And those clinging drops are the whole problem, they’re full of leftover detergent, sitting on the glass and slowly eating at it. Rinse aid gets the water off fast.

So the neighbor whose glasses still look new? She isn’t lucky. She quietly stopped trusting the way her dishwasher came out of the box.

The fix costs about $5 and takes under a minute

If you read all of that and thought, “that’s how I run my dishwasher,” you’re not alone. Almost every American home defaults to the same setup: a full detergent pod, heated dry on, and an empty rinse aid dispenser. That’s the setup killing your glasses.

Change these five things starting with your next load:

  1. Cut your detergent in half if you have soft water. Libbey suggests about one tablespoon (roughly 15 ml) of powder or gel per load. If you use pods, look for one labeled for soft water, or break a pod in half for lightly dirty loads. More soap doesn’t mean cleaner, just more leftover chemical eating your glasses.
  2. Turn off the heated dry setting. Switch to air dry, energy saver dry, or “no heat” (the exact name depends on your machine). Your dishes will still dry, especially once the next step is in place.
  3. Keep the rinse aid dispenser full. This is the step almost everyone skips. It’s the one your neighbor didn’t. Bob Vila notes that popular rinse aids like Finish Jet-Dry and Cascade Platinum are made to help protect glassware from etching over time.
  4. Skip the sanitize and high-temp cycles for everyday loads. Save those for when someone in the house is sick. A normal load doesn’t need the extra heat.
  5. Stop pre-rinsing your dishes. Food bits in the water actually absorb some of the detergent’s strength. A perfectly clean load of scraped dishes gives the detergent nothing to react with, except your glasses.

That’s it. No new machine. No fancy product. A bottle of rinse aid runs around $5 (about €4.50) and lasts months. Cutting your detergent actually saves money over time.

The glasses already etched? Sadly, they’re gone for good. But everything else in your cabinet still looking right, the wine glasses, tumblers, mixing bowls, all of it you can still save. Starting with your next load.
