Dishwasher won’t drain? Before you pay for a repair, one 5-minute check almost always fixes it

You open the dishwasher waiting for clean plates and a puff of steam. Instead you get a pond. Two inches (5 cm) of gray, greasy water sitting at the bottom, a few soggy bits of food floating on top, and that specific smell that tells you the cycle ended a while ago and none of the water left the machine.

The first thought is almost always the same. Something expensive broke. Probably the pump. That’s the part folks kind of know is in there somewhere, doing the job of pushing water out. And once you land on “the pump,” the rest of the day is basically decided. You start Googling repair numbers. You start bracing for a bill somewhere between $150 and $400 (about €140 to €370, or £120 to £320). You start wondering if it’s even worth fixing, or if it’s just time to buy a new machine.

But there’s something almost every homeowner gets wrong here. The pump is hardly ever what actually broke.

Every big appliance brand, and every plumber who’s ever taken this kind of call, will tell you the same thing. The drain pump is a genuinely tough little part. It’s usually the very last thing a repair tech checks, not the first. When someone calls in a panic about standing water, the guy who shows up isn’t planning to swap out the pump. He’s planning to check three specific spots, in a specific order, that cause the huge majority of these calls.

Two of the three take about a minute to look at. All three cost $0 to fix. And one of them, in particular, catches people totally off guard, because it’s a piece of factory plastic that was supposed to be taken out during install and just wasn’t. It’s the reason a brand-new dishwasher, in a house where everything else works fine, can sit there full of dirty water on day one for no reason the owner can figure out on their own.

Why the pump gets blamed anyway

The pump takes the fall because it’s the only part in the drain story most people can even name. You picture a dishwasher, you picture a machine that fills up with water and then pushes it back out, and the thing that pushes water is the pump. So when water stops leaving, the pump feels like the obvious bad guy.

The problem with that thinking is what happens next. Modern dishwashers, according to Bosch’s own U.S. owner-support page, throw drain-related error codes based on how much water is still sitting in the tub after the drain part of the cycle runs. The machine doesn’t actually know why the water is still there. It just knows the water didn’t leave when it was supposed to. So a blockage anywhere along the drain path will trip the exact same error code as a truly dead pump. Same blinking light, same beep, same “call for service” message on the screen.

A repair guide from Parts Dr on the GE FTD (“Failure to Drain”) error puts it even more bluntly. When a GE dishwasher throws that FTD code, the problem may not be the drain pump at all. The control board is just reading a water-level signal, not actually checking the hardware.

That’s why the pros don’t start with the pump. Advice from Sears Home Services, Roto-Rooter, and Consumer Priority Service all follow the same order of checks, and it puts the pump dead last. One appliance repair shop in Lubbock, Texas said it about as plainly as anyone: nine times out of ten, the trouble is one of the first spots they look at, and none of those spots needs a replacement part. The pump only enters the conversation if all three come back clean.

The three spots pros check, in the order they check them

Before you touch anything, cut the power. Unplug the dishwasher at the wall if you can reach the plug, or flip the breaker for the kitchen. Water plus electricity plus you crouched under a cabinet is a bad mix, and every safety page from every brand opens with this same warning.

Now, in order.

1. The filter at the bottom of the tub (the one most people don’t know is there)

This is the number-one culprit. Every modern dishwasher has a little removable filter sitting in a small round well at the bottom of the tub, right under the lower spray arm. It’s about the size of a coffee mug. Almost nobody cleans it, because almost nobody knows it exists.

Consumer Priority Service, an appliance warranty company, calls this the most common cause of standing water. Over time, the filter clogs with bits of food and grease, and water just can’t push through.

Pull out the lower rack, reach down, and twist the filter counter-clockwise until it lifts free. Rinse it under hot water with dish soap and an old toothbrush, snap it back into place, and run a drain cycle. If the water leaves, you’re done.

2. The plastic plug the installer forgot to knock out

If your dishwasher stopped draining right after a new garbage disposal or dishwasher install, go check this one right now. It’s almost certainly the answer.

Every new garbage disposal comes with a small plastic disc, called a knockout plug, sealing off the little side port where the dishwasher hose connects. Homes without a dishwasher need that plug to stay in. Homes with a dishwasher need it knocked out before the hose gets attached. That step gets skipped all the time, on both DIY jobs and rushed contractor installs.

Maytag says it plainly on its product-help page: if your dishwasher isn’t draining, check whether the disposer knockout plug was actually taken out. Whirlpool ranks it as one of the first things to check on any recent install.

Open the cabinet under the sink and find where the ribbed drain hose connects to the side of the disposal. Loosen the clamp, pull the hose off, and look inside the opening. If you see a flat plastic disc blocking the hole, that’s your problem. Grab it with long needle-nose pliers, or tap it inward with a screwdriver so it drops into the grinding chamber below. Reattach the hose. Done.

3. The kinked hose behind your cleaning supplies

If the filter is clean and the plug isn’t the issue, the last spot to check is the drain hose itself.

Whirlpool notes that a badly installed drain hose is a common reason for drain problems, but the more common version is just daily life. The cabinet under the sink is where folks shove the big bottle of degreaser, the sponge caddy, the bag of dishwasher pods. Any one of those, pushed back too hard, can pinch the corrugated hose flat against the cabinet wall.

Move everything out. Trace the hose from the back of the dishwasher over to where it meets the disposal or sink drain, and look for any sharp bend or squashed section. Gently work it back into a smooth curve. Bob Vila’s home-repair guide notes that once a hose kinks, it tends to kink again in the same spot, so keep that area clear from now on.

What it saves you

Filter, plug, hose. About five minutes, a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and zero dollars.

A drain-pump service call in the U.S. usually runs $150 to $400 (about €140 to €370, or £120 to £320). Do these three checks first. If none of them fixes it, then a pump conversation is a fair one to have. But the honest odds, backed by every major brand, are that you’ll never get that far.
