Before you replace another dead LED bulb, read this: the fix takes 5 seconds and costs nothing

If you’ve bought a fresh pack of LED bulbs in the last year or two because the ones you swore would last “20 years” burned out in six months, you’re not losing your mind. You’re not the only one, either. Whole comment threads on Reddit and neighborhood Facebook groups are full of people asking the same thing: why do my LED bulbs keep dying?

The box promises decades. Real life keeps saying otherwise.

This is what almost nobody catches at checkout: the bulb itself is usually fine. The part that dies first isn’t the little glowing chip on top. It’s a small part tucked inside the base, and it’s dying because of where you screwed the bulb in, not because the bulb was bad.

We’ll get to the actual fix in a minute. First, the part most people get wrong.

The “cool light” thing isn’t quite true

You’ve probably heard that LEDs run cool. That’s the whole reason we all switched from those hot-to-the-touch old-school bulbs. And it’s true. Sort of.

LEDs are cool at the top and warm at the bottom. The light-emitting chip on top barely heats up. But the base of the bulb, the plastic and metal chunk that screws into the socket, has a small piece of electronics inside it. Think of it like a tiny power pack that turns your wall’s electricity into the right kind of power the LED needs. And that little power pack runs warm. In some bulbs, pretty warm.

In a regular table lamp or an open hanging light, that warmth just rises off the base and cool room air moves in to replace it. Nothing to worry about. The bulb stays comfortable, lives its long life, everyone’s happy.

But there’s a very specific type of ceiling light in most American homes where that warmth has nowhere to go. And that’s where things quietly fall apart.

The type of light fixture that keeps eating your bulbs

Look up right now at the ceiling in your bedroom, hallway, closet, or bathroom. If you see a light where the bulb is completely sealed inside a glass or plastic cover, with no open bottom and no vents, you’re looking at what the lighting industry calls a fully enclosed fixture.

Common ones you probably have:

  • The classic frosted glass round ceiling light (people jokingly call it the “boob light”)
  • Round glass or plastic ceiling globes, super common in hallways and stairwells
  • Sealed porch lights and entry lanterns with a full glass cover
  • Mason-jar and vintage-style lights with fully closed shades
  • Some can lights in the ceiling that have a sealed glass front

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program has a very literal definition for these: any light where the total open airflow around the bulb is less than about 3 square inches (roughly 19 square centimeters), or where the opening is smaller than the space the bulb is sitting in.

Translation: almost no air can move through them. The bulb is basically sitting in a small sealed jar hanging from your ceiling.

Why sealed lights slowly cook the bulb

Now put those two ideas together.

You’ve got a bulb whose base gets warm during normal use. And you’ve got a light fixture that traps warm air. That warm air has nowhere to go, so it just pools around the base of the bulb, right where that little power pack sits inside.

Over hours and hours of the light being on, the temperature in that small space climbs. And stays climbed. Inside that power pack is a tiny part called a capacitor, which is basically a little sealed pod of fluid and metal that’s extremely sensitive to heat. Too much heat for too long, and it gives up. When it does, your bulb starts flickering, gets dim before its time, or just quietly stops working one afternoon.

There’s a rough rule engineers use for this stuff: for every extra 18°F (10°C) of heat around the base, an LED’s lifespan can roughly get cut in half. So a bulb rated for 25,000 hours in a normal setting can end up lasting a small fraction of that inside a sealed ceiling dome.

And this isn’t just a hunch. Research from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solid-State Lighting program has shown, in stress tests done on real LED products, that most LED bulbs die because the power pack in the base fails, not because the light chip fails. Data traced back to DOE-supported studies puts the power pack’s share of LED failures at around 90 percent. The light chip itself accounts for only about 10 percent.

Which is why the bulb you just unscrewed and tossed in the trash probably still had a perfectly good LED inside. You threw out a working chip attached to a cooked power pack.

The 5-second fix that costs zero extra dollars

Before you buy your next pack of LED bulbs, look at the box for the words “enclosed fixture rated” (or “suitable for enclosed fixtures”). That’s the whole fix.

That’s it. That’s the entire thing.

Bulbs marked this way are built differently on the inside. They have a bigger metal piece near the base to spread heat, and the parts inside the power pack are built to handle higher temperatures. The maker has actually tested them in the hot, still-air conditions a sealed ceiling light creates. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program says it plainly in its consumer guide: fully enclosed light fixtures trap heat and can shorten the life of the wrong LED bulb, so check the packaging before you buy.

Now this is the part that stings a little: you’re not paying more for this bulb. A 4-pack of regular LED bulbs at Home Depot runs about $3 a bulb (roughly €2.80 or £2.40). A 4-pack of the same size bulbs specifically labeled enclosed-fixture rated from brands like Luxrite or Philips? About $3 to $5 a bulb, sitting on the same shelf. There’s just a label people don’t read.

What to do at the store, step by step:

  1. First, figure out which lights in your home are actually sealed. Round glass domes, ceiling globes, flush-mount ceiling lights, sealed porch lanterns, mason-jar styles. Take a mental note, or snap a photo on your phone.
  2. When you’re buying replacements for those specific lights, flip the box over. Look for “enclosed fixture rated,” “suitable for enclosed fixtures,” or “enclosed rated” printed on it.
  3. If it doesn’t say so on the box, it isn’t rated. Makers put it there when they’ve tested for it. No mention means it’s not tested for that use.
  4. For open lights (table lamps, hanging lights with open bottoms, open wall sconces), any regular LED bulb is fine.
  5. Bonus tip: in a light fixture that holds several bulbs, don’t mix old-school hot bulbs with LEDs. The old-school ones run hot and heat up everything sharing the fixture, cooking the LEDs.

One honest note: an enclosed-rated bulb won’t magically hit 25,000 hours in every fixture out there. A really poorly built fixture, or one sitting in a hot attic, can still shorten any bulb’s life. But a rated bulb gives you a fair shot at the years the box promises, instead of quietly frying in the first few months.
