You walked past it again this morning. The radiator in the corner has a little wet spot under the valve. Not a real leak. Just a drop, maybe two. You put a folded towel under it a few weeks ago. It’s damp. You wring it out and keep moving.
Almost every homeowner in an older house has done a version of this. You tell yourself you’ll get to it in the spring. Or when the boiler guy comes for the tune-up. Or when it gets worse.
But there’s something about that little drip most people never learn. The towel isn’t a fix. The towel is the reason the problem is getting worse.
That slow drip isn’t standing still. It’s a countdown. And the thing counting down isn’t the pipe or the boiler. It’s a tiny piece of soft material tucked inside the valve, in a spot most people never look at. When it gives up, you’re not looking at another damp towel. You’re looking at a chewed-up floor, a plumber’s bill, and, if you’re unlucky, an emergency call in the middle of a January night.

The fix costs almost nothing, takes about two minutes, and uses a tool that’s probably in your kitchen drawer. Most people just don’t know it exists.
Why a “harmless” drip isn’t harmless
Start with what that water is doing while you’re not watching.
The EPA doesn’t sugarcoat it. Its official guide on mold, moisture and your home says that when water leaks happen indoors and wet stuff isn’t dried out within 24 to 48 hours, mold usually starts growing. That’s federal guidance, and it applies to a slow drip just as much as a burst pipe.
A slow radiator leak never dries out. It’s a steady little water source sitting on your floor, day after day. Your towel feels dry on top because the water is quietly evaporating into your living room air, exactly the extra humidity you didn’t want. Underneath, the floor finish is doing worse.
You’ve probably seen a chalky white ring around the drip too. That’s water evaporating and leaving minerals stuck to the brass. The crust holds moisture against the metal like a wet sponge, so the seal that used to keep water inside slowly gets eaten from the outside.
Then there’s the money side. According to home cost data from Bob Vila, a full radiator valve replacement in the US runs about $150 to $350 (roughly €135 to €320, or £120 to £275), and HomeGuide lists a similar range. That’s the cheap version. The more common version, once the drip has been going for months, is the valve replacement plus a floor patch plus a chunk of the wood underneath. If it fails on a Sunday night in January, it’s emergency-rate labor on top.
All of that is the price of not knowing about one small nut.
What’s actually leaking
Look at the top of your radiator valve. Below the plastic cap is the handle you turn to open or close the valve. Under the handle is a thin metal rod that runs down into the valve body. That rod is what actually moves when you turn the handle. Turn one way, water flows. Turn the other way, water stops.
Because that rod has to move, the hole it slides through can’t be sealed shut. Something soft has to be wrapped around it, tight enough to keep water in, loose enough that the rod can still turn.
That “something soft” is a small rubber or fiber ring called the packing. After years of the heat cycling on and off, it dries out, gets squashed flat, and stops hugging the rod tightly. Water finds the gap and starts creeping up and out. That’s your leak.
Right above the packing sits a small hex nut, hidden under the plastic cap. Plumbers call it the gland nut. Its whole job is to press the packing down against the rod. When the packing stops sealing, the fix isn’t a new valve. It’s just squeezing the packing again, using the nut that was designed to do exactly that.
The two-minute fix, with a tool you already own
Before you touch anything, turn the heat off at the thermostat and let the system cool for at least an hour. You want the pipe cool or barely warm, not hot. A short wait now keeps a two-minute job from turning into a burn.
Then, in order:
- Pop off the little plastic cap on top of the valve. It usually comes off with a fingernail or the back of a butter knife. Under it, you’ll see a small hex nut around the metal rod. That’s the one you want.
- Grab an adjustable wrench (or a small spanner) and set it to fit that nut snugly. Not loose. A loose wrench will round off the corners and turn a two-minute fix into a real problem.
- Turn the nut clockwise, exactly one quarter turn. That’s it. This is the whole trick. A quarter turn is enough to squeeze the packing back down against the rod and stop the drip. Trade guides from HouseWarm, BestHeating, and a technical write-up from Engineer Fix all agree: an eighth to a quarter turn is the standard, and cranking harder is the number one way homeowners crack a valve they were trying to save. If a quarter turn doesn’t stop the drip, walk away for ten minutes and try one more quarter turn. Never more than that in one sitting.
- Wipe the valve dry and check back in an hour, then again the next morning. If it’s bone dry, you’re done.
- If the drip comes back after two quarter-turn tries, the packing is worn out and needs replacing, not just squeezing. A roll of PTFE tape (about $2, or roughly €1.80, at any hardware store), wound tightly around the rod after you loosen the nut all the way, will usually buy you several more years of dry service. For older cast-iron radiators, pre-cut graphite packing string (Danco makes one for around $5 to $8) is the more old-school, longer-lasting option. Either way, it’s still a job you can do yourself in under fifteen minutes with the heat off. Call a plumber only if the valve body itself is rusted, cracked, or the nut spins without gripping anything.
What most people get wrong
The towel habit hurts you three ways at once. It keeps your floor in constant contact with moisture, the exact condition the EPA warns about for mold. It hides how bad the problem is getting. And it lets the packing keep getting squashed under water pressure without ever being fixed, which is why the little drip you learned to live with in October turns into a real puddle by February.
Twisting the handle on top doesn’t help either. That just spins the rod inside worn-out packing. It doesn’t press anything down.
And whatever you do, don’t tighten the big nut lower down, where the valve meets the pipe. That one holds the whole valve together, and cranking on it can pull the joint loose and turn a slow drip into a real spill. The nut you want is the small one, tucked right under the plastic cap.
