You’ve set the thermostat to 70°F (21°C). The furnace is running. You can even feel warm air rising if you stand near the window. And still, the room feels cold, and the bill keeps climbing.
So you bump the heat up a little more. The house never quite catches up.
Most of us blame the furnace, the drafty windows, or just the weather being brutal that week. But in a huge number of American homes, the real thief is something you paid good money for on purpose to keep the room warm. It’s sitting right in front of your window as you read this. And it looks completely normal.

The setup you probably have and never think about
Walk through almost any American home in winter and you’ll see the same picture. A window. A heater right underneath it (a radiator, a baseboard unit, or a floor vent). And a pair of long, heavy curtains hanging from the ceiling all the way down to the floor, drawn shut for the night.
None of that is a mistake. Heaters get put under windows on purpose, because the window is the coldest wall in the room. Long, thick curtains aren’t a mistake either. The U.S. Department of Energy says that medium-weight drapes, closed on a cold night, can cut the heat you lose through the window by up to 10 percent, and heavier thermal curtains do even better.
Two smart choices. But when you put them together the way most of us do, they cancel each other out.
Why the room stays cold even when the heater sounds like it’s working overtime
Think about how a heater under a window actually warms your room. Cold air slides down the glass and gathers near the floor. It hits the heater. The heater warms that air. The warm air rises, drifts out into the room, cools, sinks back down, and around it goes. That gentle loop is what actually reaches you on the couch ten feet away. Not the heater itself. The moving air.
Now close a floor-length curtain in front of that heater and picture what just happened.
You’ve built yourself a tall, skinny box. Cold window on one side. Your curtain on the other. Your heater in the middle, pumping out warm air with nowhere to go but straight up. That warm air rides up the inside of the curtain, slams into the coldest glass in the room, cools right back down, and a lot of the warmth you paid for leaks out into the yard.
Meanwhile, your side of the curtain barely gets any of it. Your thermostat is on the far wall, and it’s cold where it is, so it keeps calling for more heat. Your furnace keeps burning fuel. The bill keeps climbing. And you’re still cold, wrapped in a blanket, wondering why the room won’t warm up.
Rob Nezard of UK Radiators, quoted in Livingetc, puts it plainly: when you block the front of a heater, “the heat gets stuck behind or in the furniture rather than circulating effectively around the room.” A closed curtain does the exact same thing. It just does it with fabric instead of a sofa.
And this isn’t a tiny problem
Heating industry estimates, reported by BZ Radiator, figure that a heater fully hidden behind heavy curtains can waste around 10 to 20 percent of the energy you’re paying for. It can climb to 25 percent when the curtains are really thick and the windows are old and leaky. On a $200 winter heating bill, that’s $20 to $50 a month, every month, walking straight out the window. The little pocket of trapped air behind the drape can hit 105 to 120°F (40 to 49°C) while your actual room sits at 60 to 65°F (15 to 18°C). All that heat is right there. It’s just on the wrong side of the fabric.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s own Energy Saver page makes it clear that drapes only save you heat in winter when warm room air can’t get behind them and cool down on the glass. But when the heater sits behind the curtain, the warm air is being fed right into that space on purpose, exactly the setup they warn against. And ENERGY STAR guidance says it in one line: if furniture or drapes are blocking your heaters, you’re making your furnace work harder than it should.
If you read all that and thought “wait, that’s my living room every single night,” you’re in very good company. This slips past millions of American households for a simple reason: both pieces (the curtains for warmth, the heater under the window) make sense on their own. Almost nobody notices they’re fighting each other the moment the drapes get pulled shut. You didn’t do anything wrong. You did two right things, and the two right things happened to cancel each other out.
The good news: the fix is free, takes about two minutes, and you don’t have to give up your long curtains or buy anything new.
What to actually do tonight
You’ve got three options. Any one of them helps. Do all three and the room will feel different within an hour.
1. Pull the curtains back the moment the heater kicks on. The cheapest, most effective move. Tie the curtains back with the fabric loops most curtains come with, or clip-on holdbacks, or push them fully to the sides of the window. The heater now has a clear runway into the room. Close them again once it’s warm. This one move gets back most of the lost heat.
2. Trim the curtains so they stop above the heater. BestHeating suggests the bottom of the curtain sit at least 4 cm (about 1.5 inches) above the top of the radiator. Iron-on hem tape from any craft store costs under $5. Sill-length curtains are the clean permanent version.
3. Put a small shelf above the heater. A slim shelf a few inches above the top of the radiator catches the warm air on its way up and pushes it forward into the room. Use this if you don’t want to shorten or tie back your floor-length curtains.
One warning: don’t tuck the curtain behind the heater against the wall. It jams fabric into the gap the heater uses to pull cold floor air up, and fabric that close to a hot surface is a slow fire risk. Tie the curtains to the sides instead.
One bonus move most people never think of
The wall right behind your heater is almost always an outside wall, meaning cold air is on the other side, and a big chunk of the heat your radiator gives off soaks into it and leaks outside.
A $10 roll of radiator reflector foil, a thin aluminum sheet you stick to that wall, bounces the heat back into the room. Research on Wikipedia’s radiator reflector page, citing a Harris study, found plain aluminum foil there cuts heat loss through that wall patch by more than 70 percent and shaves about 6 percent off room energy use over a winter.
