Your AC froze up and you turned down the thermostat: here’s why your house keeps getting hotter

It’s the middle of a hot afternoon. The thermostat says 78°F (26°C). You set it to 74°F (23°C) an hour ago. You nudge it to 72, then 70. The vents feel weak, almost warm. You drop it to 68°F (20°C). Nothing happens. The house just keeps getting hotter, and now there’s a wet ring forming on the ceiling right under your indoor AC unit.

Here’s the part nobody warned you about: every time you pushed the thermostat lower, you made things worse. Not a little worse. A lot worse. The reason has nothing to do with the number you set. It has to do with something happening inside your unit you can’t see, and a mistake so easy to make most people are halfway into it before they know it’s a mistake.

Catch it in the next hour or two and you’ll dodge a big water damage bill and skip what AC pros call the priciest fix in the system. Miss it, and you’re staring at a repair that starts around $1,200 (€1,100) and can climb past $3,000 (€2,750).

Why turning it colder feels right

When a room won’t cool off, the reflex is obvious. The thermostat controls the temperature, so you tell the thermostat you want it colder. That’s how everything else in your house works. Oven not hot enough? Crank the dial. Freezer feels warm? Turn it down.

An AC is different. It doesn’t “try harder” when you ask for a colder number. It just runs longer, doing the exact same amount of cooling it was already doing. And if something’s already gone wrong inside the unit, running it longer is the last thing you want.

The water is the real warning sign

That wet spot on the ceiling isn’t random. It’s your AC screaming at you. When water starts dripping from your indoor unit, something inside has turned into a block of ice. Bryant’s homeowner help page says it plainly: when ice builds up on the parts inside your indoor AC unit, the melting water can overflow the little tray that catches it and cause staining, bubbling paint, or sagging drywall (1). If your unit lives in the attic, that’s the ceiling of the room right below it.

James River Air Conditioning warns that a big block of ice melting inside your unit releases a shocking amount of water fast, way more than the drain was built to handle (2). That ceiling stain is usually what gets a homeowner’s attention. But it’s not the worst thing going on.

The part that’s actually being ruined

While you’ve been dropping the thermostat, the big metal box outside your house has been quietly taking damage that’ll cost thousands to fix.

Inside that box is the compressor, basically the heart of your AC (the pump that pushes cooling fluid through the whole system). It’s built to handle that fluid in one form only, as a gas. But when ice builds up inside your indoor unit, some of the fluid doesn’t turn into gas the way it’s supposed to. It stays liquid. And that liquid gets sent back to the compressor, which has no way to deal with it.

An industry trade magazine called ACHR News (the trusted go-to publication for AC and heating pros) puts what happens next in blunt terms: liquid getting into a compressor can break valves, bend the metal rods inside, and in bad cases crack the main shaft (3). Repair techs call it “liquid slugging,” and it’s one of the fastest ways to kill an AC dead.

According to This Old House’s 2026 pricing guide, replacing an AC compressor averages $1,550 (€1,420), with bills running $800 (€735) to $2,300 (€2,100) (4). HomeGuide’s contractor data goes higher: $1,800 (€1,650) to $2,800 (€2,570), and larger systems often top $3,000 (€2,750) (5). Part of the jump is the EPA phasing out an older cooling fluid called R-410A, pushing its price from about $90 (€83) a pound a few years back to $150 (€138) or more today (5).

So dropping the thermostat isn’t just useless. Every extra minute a frozen AC keeps running, you’re feeding more liquid into the one part you can’t afford to break.

Why it froze in the first place

Your AC cools your house by pulling warm air out of your rooms, blowing it across a set of cold metal fins inside the indoor unit, and letting those fins soak up the heat. The now-cooler air blows back into your rooms. Simple.

But the fins can only soak up heat if warm room air keeps flowing across them. Cut off that flow of warm air and the fins get colder and colder with no heat to absorb. Eventually they drop below freezing, 32°F (0°C), and the moisture in your indoor air, instead of dripping away, freezes onto the metal.

That first bit of ice is where the trap snaps shut. The ice blocks even more airflow, which makes the fins even colder, which grows more ice. Meyer & Depew, a New Jersey HVAC company, calls this a self-feeding loop that ends with the whole set of fins as one solid frozen brick (6).

Nine times out of ten, one of three things is choking the airflow: a filthy air filter, a return vent blocked by furniture or a rug, or vents in unused rooms shut off. All three are free to fix.

What to do in the next hour

Turn off the cooling. Right now, before you finish reading this, if your AC is still running. On the thermostat, switch the mode from Cool to Off. That stops the compressor from taking more damage.

Then switch the fan setting from Auto to On. That runs the indoor fan without the compressor, pushing warm room air across the frozen fins to melt the ice much faster than leaving it alone. Carrier’s owner’s help page says a frozen AC usually takes 1 to 4 hours to fully thaw this way, up to 24 hours for really thick ice (7).

While you wait, do these four things:

  1. Put old towels around the base of your indoor unit and inside any backup drip tray underneath. If your unit’s in the attic, don’t skip this. Towels stand between a wet floor and a ruined ceiling (2).
  2. Pull out the air filter and hold it up to the light. If you can’t see through it, that filter is why your AC froze. A new one is $5 to $20 (€5 to €18) at any hardware store. The U.S. Department of Energy says a clean filter alone can cut your AC’s energy use by 5 to 15 percent (8).
  3. Walk every room and open every vent. Move furniture, rugs, or curtains blocking any return vent (the big vent that pulls air back into the system).
  4. Don’t turn cooling back on until the ice is completely gone. A half-melted AC plus a running compressor is exactly what you’re trying to avoid.

Once the fins are thawed, the filter’s new, and every vent’s open, flip the thermostat back to Cool and set a normal number, not aggressively low.

If it freezes up again with a clean filter and open vents, stop and call a licensed AC technician. A repeat freeze after you’ve fixed the airflow almost always means the cooling fluid is leaking somewhere, which isn’t a DIY fix. In the U.S., only EPA-certified pros can legally handle that fluid.
