You crank the heat up. The radiator gets hot to the touch. Forty minutes later, you’re still under a blanket wondering what’s wrong with your heat. The room right above the basement is toasty. This one isn’t.
You’ve already tried the usual stuff. You bled the radiator. You checked the valve. You even had somebody come look at it once, and they told you the system is fine. And it is fine. The radiator is doing exactly what it was built to do.
So why does it feel like the heat is disappearing?

Because in this room, it actually is. If you live in an older home, a huge chunk of the heat your radiator gives off is being lost before it ever reaches you. And almost nobody thinks to look at the one thing that’s stealing it.
The room is cold, but the heat is going somewhere
Think about how a radiator works. It gets hot. Some of that heat rises off the top as warm air, which is the part you feel on your face when you stand near it. But a big share of the heat goes in a different direction: straight out the back.
According to Expert Reviews’ testing breakdown, about 40% of a radiator’s heat is aimed at the wall behind it. In most rooms, that heat bounces around and eventually finds its way back to you. No big deal.
But in some rooms, it doesn’t. And you can’t feel the difference until you know what to look for.
Why this happens in older American homes
If you live in the Northeast, the Midwest, or an older Rust Belt city, there’s a strong chance your home was built before wall insulation was standard. According to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), close to five million US single-family homes are still heated by hot water or steam radiators from a boiler. In Chicago alone, one longtime local expert estimates that steam-heated homes make up 30 to 40 percent of housing units.
And most of those radiators sit right where a builder in 1925 would have put them. Directly under a window. On the coldest wall in the room.
That made sense at the time. Rising heat cancels out the cold draft coming off the glass. But nobody in 1925 was thinking about what happens on the back side of the radiator, where the metal is basically bolted onto the coldest surface in the whole room.
What blaming the wrong thing feels like
If you’ve lived through this, you know the loop.
You bleed the radiator. It gets hot. The room stays cold. You call a heating company. They test the boiler, check the pressure, look at the flow. Everything is fine, they say, and they shrug. You plug in a space heater to fill the gap. Your electric bill jumps. You hang heavier curtains. You pull the couch closer to the radiator. The room still takes an hour to feel warm, and it goes cold again the second the heat cycles off.
At some point you stop trusting your own house. You start guessing. Maybe the radiator is too small for the room. Maybe the pipes are half-clogged. Maybe the whole system is dying and you’re going to end up spending thousands to replace it. None of that turns out to be true.
Meanwhile, this is what’s actually going on. The heating runs. You pay for that heat. Some of it stays with you, some of it walks straight out of your home before it ever reaches you. And nobody at your local hardware store, no heating repair guy you’ve called out, has ever thought to point it out, because they’re all looking at the equipment. Not what the equipment is bolted to.
Because the answer isn’t the radiator, the pipes, or the boiler. It’s the wall.
The fix isn’t inside the radiator. It’s the four-inch (10 cm) space directly behind it.
That cold outside wall, the one with freezing air on the other side, acts like a magnet for heat. The moment the back of the radiator warms up, the wall soaks that heat up and passes it right through to the outdoors. It’s the same way a cold spoon pulls the warmth out of a mug of coffee. The University of Salford’s Energy House lab put a real number on it: on an uninsulated outside wall, up to 54% of the heat hitting the back of the radiator was going straight outside. During peak heating, that jumped to 66%.
You’re not paying to heat your room. You’re paying to heat the sidewalk outside.
The fix that costs less than lunch
The real fix takes under five minutes per radiator.
Slide a thin, shiny reflector panel down the gap between your radiator and the wall.
That’s it. It’s a lightweight sheet, usually foil glued to a thin backing, that sits flat against the wall with the shiny side facing the back of the radiator. It doesn’t touch the pipes. It doesn’t need any wiring. You don’t take the radiator off the wall to install it.
What it does is stop the wall behind the radiator from grabbing all that heat in the first place. Instead, the heat bounces off the shiny surface and heads back into the room, which is where you wanted it all along.
According to the same Salford Energy House trials, a properly fitted panel cut heat loss through the wall behind the radiator by more than half. Radflek, one of the brands the UK’s Energy Saving Trust recommends, claims their panels reflect at least 95% of the heat that hits the back of your radiator. That’s a company number, but it lines up with the independent lab results.
How to actually do it
- Buy a real reflector panel kit, not kitchen foil. Regular aluminum foil goes dull fast and needs replacing all the time. A proper kit runs about $15 to $25 (€14 to €23) for a multi-radiator pack on Amazon or at a hardware store, and it lasts for years.
- Only use them on outside walls. A wall with the outdoors on the other side. If your radiator is on an inside wall, the heat is just moving into another room in your house, so a panel doesn’t help much.
Turn the radiator off and let it cool. Measure it, cut the panel to size (leave about a half-inch or 1 cm of space on each side), and stick it up using the peel-and-stick backing or the magnets that come with the kit. Shiny side faces the radiator. Slide it down the gap behind the radiator. Done.
- Check the wall first. Look behind the radiator for damp spots, mold, or peeling paint. According to tesa’s technical guidance, sticking foil tight against an already-damp wall can trap moisture and make mold worse. If the wall is dry, you’re fine. If it isn’t, fix the damp problem first.
