Your rain jacket used to shrug off water like a duck. Walk in from a downpour, shake it off, hang it up, and it barely felt damp. Now the same jacket comes home from a light drizzle looking like you fell in a lake. The shoulders are dark and heavy. Your shirt underneath is soaked. You feel cold and clammy the whole walk home.
So you do what any normal person would do. You blame the jacket. You start shopping for a new one. Maybe you grab a can of that spray-on waterproof stuff. Maybe you just accept that your favorite rain shell is done after only a couple of seasons.
But your jacket almost certainly isn’t broken. The part inside it that actually keeps rain out is still there, still doing its job just fine. What’s failed is a thin coating on the outside of the fabric. And what killed that coating wasn’t the rain. Wasn’t the mud. Wasn’t the age either.
It was something you’ve been doing to it every single time you cleaned it, thinking you were helping.

The part of your jacket that quits first
A rain jacket has two things working for it. There’s a waterproof layer built into the middle of the fabric (the part that actually stops rain from reaching your skin), and there’s a super thin coating on the very outside called DWR. That’s the coating that makes water bead up into little balls and roll right off.
When that outer coating stops working, the fabric on the outside soaks up water like a sponge. Gear folks call this “wetting out.” According to REI’s care guide, once the outside is soaked, the jacket can’t breathe properly anymore, and your own sweat gets trapped inside. The middle layer is still keeping rain out, but you feel wet and cold anyway from your own trapped sweat. The jacket feels dead. It isn’t. Only the coating on the outside is.
You can test this in about 10 seconds. Sprinkle some water on the shoulder of a dry jacket. If it beads up into little round drops that roll off, the coating is fine. If the fabric turns dark and the water soaks in flat, the coating has quit. That’s the whole test. Every rain jacket brand from Gore-Tex to Flylow points to this same trick.
So the real question is: what wore that coating out so fast?
Why “washing wears it out” is the wrong answer
Most people figure the coating is fragile. The story in their head goes something like: DWR is delicate, rain scrubs it off, mud grinds it down, and after a season or two you’re stuck buying spray or a new jacket. Sounds reasonable. It also happens to be wrong for most jackets that seem to have “given up.”
Think about it this way: if that story were true, washing your jacket less would help. It doesn’t. Rainy Pass, one of the biggest outdoor gear repair shops in the country, told Outside magazine that when someone says their jacket isn’t waterproof anymore, most of the time it just needs to be washed. Nikwax’s own team has said the same thing. More washing is usually better, not worse. The coating isn’t being worn out by cleaning. Something you’re using during cleaning is the actual problem.
To find what’s really killing the coating, you have to look at what’s touching your jacket during a wash cycle. And that means looking at the one thing everybody tosses in without thinking twice.
What’s actually killing your jacket
The twist most people miss is this. The coating isn’t wearing off. It’s being smothered. According to Nikwax, one of the biggest names in taking care of technical fabrics, regular laundry detergent leaves behind a residue that pulls water in instead of pushing it away. Their exact wording: standard detergents leave “a water attractive residue” that makes waterproof gear soak up water in wet weather.
That gunk doesn’t rinse out. It builds up wash after wash, coating the fibers of your jacket and quietly turning the outside from water-repelling to water-loving.
Gore-Tex, the company that makes most of the waterproof layers used in outdoor jackets, spells it out on their own care page. They say straight up: don’t use powder detergent, don’t use fabric softener, don’t use stain removers, don’t use bleach. Fabric softener is the worst offender, because its whole job is to coat fibers with a soft, waxy film. That film is the exact opposite of what your rain jacket needs on its outside.
And there’s a sneaky one on top of that. Arc’teryx, the Canadian brand behind some of the most technical jackets on the market, points out that even regular household detergents contain stuff like softeners and brighteners that get left behind on the fabric. Even the gentle ones. Even the ones marked for delicates.
The fix, and where the $0 part actually lives
You might be thinking: fine, I’ll just run it through again on rinse only. That doesn’t work. The residue is bonded into the fabric. You need a two-step reset, and the first step is free.
The coating on your jacket needs a little heat to sit up right on the fabric fibers. Picture grass that’s been stepped on. The blades are still there, just flattened. A little warmth stands them back up.
And this is the free part. The single most important step in bringing a “dead” rain jacket back to life is putting it in the dryer on low heat for about 20 minutes. REI’s care team, Gore-Tex’s own instructions, and the Flylow gear support team all say the same thing. That gentle heat wakes up the coating that’s already on your jacket. It’s free. It works on gear you already own, using a coating that’s already there.
For most jackets that have only been washed a handful of times, the dryer step alone brings the beading back at least partway. Try it before you spend a cent.
If water still doesn’t bead after the dryer test, it’s time for a proper wash.
Do this:
- Zip everything up first: main zip, pit zips, pocket zips. Fasten every Velcro tab. Gore-Tex says to do this so loose bits don’t snag and rip during the cycle.
- Skip regular detergent. Use a technical cleaner instead. Nikwax Tech Wash runs around $10 to $15 (about €9 to €14 or £8 to £12) for a bottle that handles five or six washes.
- Wash warm on a normal cycle, around 105°F (40°C), which is what Gore-Tex specifies. About 2 tablespoons (30 ml) per jacket.
- Run an extra rinse cycle to get any last residue out.
- Absolutely no fabric softener. Not one drop.
- Tumble dry on low for 20 minutes, or air dry and then run a cool iron over it with a thin cloth between the iron and the jacket.
- Test it again: sprinkle water on the shoulder. Round beads that roll off means the coating is back. A dark wet patch means it’s time for a spray-on waterproofing product.
That’s it. The factory coating is generally good for 10 to 20 washes before needing replacement, per Arc’teryx. Most people never get close, because they never wash the jacket the right way in the first place.
One last thing worth knowing
Your rain jacket was never as fragile as you thought. It was fighting through a layer of gunk no coating could beat. Strip the gunk off, warm the coating back up, and the same jacket that felt useless last week beads water again.
Skip the store. Try the dryer first.
