You step out of a hot shower, reach for a towel, wipe the mirror, and get maybe thirty seconds of clear glass before it fogs right back over. So you crank the fan up higher. Nothing changes. You crack the door open. Still nothing. You end up brushing your teeth in a blur, doing your hair in a blur, and blaming the fan.
The fan isn’t broken. It was never going to fix this. And the towel you keep grabbing? It’s quietly making the whole thing worse. There’s a fix that costs almost nothing, takes about a minute, and keeps your mirror clear through the hottest shower you can run. But to see why it works, you first have to see why the two things everyone does are actually the trap.

The fan is fighting the wrong battle
A bathroom fan pulls damp air out of the room. That’s a real job, and a good fan does it fine. The trouble is the fan can’t work fast enough to save the mirror.
Think about how quickly the fog shows up. You turn on the shower, and within a few seconds the glass is already cloudy. Meanwhile the fan is slowly swapping out the air in the room over the next several minutes. It’s like trying to bail out a bathtub with a spoon while the faucet is still running.
The Bob Vila team tested exactly this. They treated one half of a mirror and left the other half alone, then ran a hot shower. The untreated half went totally cloudy the second the steam hit it. The treated half stayed clear through the whole shower. Same room. Same fan. Same steam. So the fan clearly isn’t the deciding factor.
Now, what’s actually going on at the mirror? Warm, steamy air from the shower touches the cooler glass, and the moisture in that air turns back into water. But it doesn’t turn into a smooth sheet you can see through. It turns into thousands of tiny water beads, all packed together on the surface, each one bending light in a slightly different direction. Your eyes read all that scrambled light as fog. That’s straight from the Museum of Science in Boston, which has a whole page explaining exactly this.
So the fan isn’t useless in the room overall. It just can’t stop those tiny beads from forming on the glass. That’s a completely different problem, and the fan was never the right tool for it.
Your towel is basically greasing the glass
Now the second half of the trap. That damp bath towel you keep wiping with? It isn’t clean. It’s picked up lint from the dryer, leftover fabric softener, body wash from the last face it dried, maybe a bit of hair product. All of it invisible, all of it still sitting on the fabric.
Every time you swipe that towel across the mirror, you smear all of it onto the glass. You’re not clearing the mirror. You’re basically greasing it. The next round of steam hits a mirror that’s now stickier and rougher than before, and the water beads form even faster than the first time. So the mirror fogs back up in twenty seconds instead of thirty.
That’s the loop everyone’s stuck in. Wipe. Clear for a moment. Fog. Wipe harder. Fog faster. Blame the fan again.
What actually stops the fog
So if the fog is really thousands of tiny beads of water, the trick isn’t to keep the mirror dry. The trick is to stop the water from being able to bead up in the first place. If it lands and spreads out flat into a super-thin, see-through layer instead of pulling into beads, there’s nothing left to scatter the light. The mirror stays clear even while it’s technically wet.
To do that, you need to leave a very thin, invisible layer of something soapy on the glass. Anything soapy weakens the way water pulls into itself, so instead of forming beads, the water flattens out. This isn’t just a random internet tip. A big peer-reviewed research paper in the Journal of Materials Research and Technology, which reviews how anti-fog coatings work across everything from lab equipment to eyeglasses, lists soapy films as one of the classic ways to keep water from beading on glass. It’s the same reason ski goggles and scuba masks get treated with anti-fog spray before you use them.
And the cheapest way to get that soapy film onto your bathroom mirror is already sitting in your bathroom.
The trick
Plain foaming shaving cream. Not gel. Not the fancy kind with moisturizers. The cheap, white, foam-in-a-can type your dad probably used. Barbasol Original works. Walmart’s store brand works. Any basic can runs under $2 (around €2) for a 10-ounce can (about 300 ml).
The Museum of Science in Boston publishes this exact hack on its site, and Glass Doctor, a national glass repair company, lists it as one of their official tips. That everyday foam is loaded with the same soapy stuff sold in pricey anti-fog sprays, just without the fancy label.
Do it this way. This part matters, because most people who say it didn’t work quit too early.
- Start with a clean, dry mirror. Wipe off any toothpaste or dust with a slightly damp microfiber, then let the glass dry all the way.
- Squirt a blob of foam about the size of a golf ball onto a dry microfiber. A thin coat is the whole point.
- Rub it across the mirror in overlapping circles until it looks lightly hazed with white film.
- Now the step people skip. Keep buffing with a second dry microfiber until the mirror looks completely clear again. It’ll look worse before it looks better. When the glass squeaks under the cloth, you’re done.
- Don’t rinse it off. That thin, invisible film is what stops the fog.
That’s it. About a minute. Under $2.
How long it lasts
One clean coat holds up for one to three weeks of daily hot showers. A quiet, one-person bathroom leans toward three weeks. A busy family bathroom with three showers a day is closer to one. You’ll know it’s time to redo it when the edges mist up first while the middle still stays clear.
One quick warning. If your mirror is one of the newer LED-lit “smart” mirrors with a factory anti-fog coating, skip this or test a small corner first. The soapy film can mess with that coating. On a regular, plain bathroom mirror, you’re fine.
No shaving cream at home? A single drop of Dawn or any liquid dish soap, rubbed in and buffed clear the same way, works on the exact same idea. It won’t last as long, but it’ll get you through the morning.
