Almost every home does the same thing after moving a fridge. The movers wheel it in. Somebody pushes it against the wall, grabs the cord, plugs it in, and the compressor kicks on with that familiar hum. Ten minutes later, the light works, the shelves are cold, and it feels like a job well done.
But nobody tells you this. That last step, the one that took two seconds, is quietly the single most damaging thing you can do to a brand-new or freshly-moved fridge. It won’t stop it from working right away. It won’t trip a breaker or flash an error code. It just shaves years off the life of the priciest part inside, and you won’t find out until it’s way too late.
Repair techs see the fallout constantly. A fridge runs fine for a while, then stops cooling right, usually within a year or two of a move. The owner blames the brand. The tech opens it up and sees the same story.
The one part of your fridge that can’t really be fixed
A fridge has a lot of parts, but only one really matters for how long it lasts. It’s called the compressor, that black, football-shaped can bolted to the bottom back of the appliance. Its job is to pump the cooling gas around a sealed loop of thin pipes that keeps your food cold. It runs almost nonstop and takes real punishment.
According to Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration News, the leading trade magazine for HVAC pros, a compressor burns out when the parts inside overheat and the electrical motor breaks down. The moving pieces can actually seize up and stop turning. On most modern fridges, replacing a compressor costs so much that owners just buy a new fridge instead.
So what makes a healthy compressor suddenly seize? The answer isn’t electrical. It’s mechanical, and it comes down to a small pool of oil.
What’s really going on inside a moved fridge
Every sealed compressor has a small pool of lubricating oil sitting at the bottom, kind of like the oil pan in a car engine. That oil coats the moving parts so metal doesn’t grind on metal at high speed. Without it, a compressor is basically a dry engine, and dry engines don’t last long.
Samsung explains this plainly in its own product support docs. The fridge “contains a small quantity of oil that lubricates the internal parts of the compressor. Moving, tilting, or vibrating the refrigerator can cause the oil to move out of the reservoir and into the piping.” That piping is the thin tubing that carries the cooling gas around the loop. It’s built for gas, not oil.
Now picture moving day. The fridge gets tilted onto a dolly, rides in a truck, goes up steps, maybe briefly on its side. Every one of those movements can shake the oil out of its little pool and up into the tubing.
Then somebody plugs it back in.
Why the first power-on is the moment of truth
This is where the damage happens. When the compressor tries to fire up with its oil in the wrong place, two bad things can happen at the same time.
First, the compressor runs dry. The pump inside spins at high speed with no oil coating its moving parts. Contracting Business, another HVAC trade magazine, describes exactly this: when the oil supply breaks down, the parts wear out, overheat, and eventually seize. In the worst cases, the whole thing locks up on the very first startup and the fridge just stops working. In softer cases, the parts get scratched and scored, the wear speeds up, and the compressor dies years earlier than it should have.
Second, the oil that got shoved into the tubing gets in the way. Those pipes are really thin. Oil is thick. When it ends up in there, it can block the flow of cooling gas, so the fridge runs but never gets properly cold. Owners spend weeks fiddling with the thermostat and throwing out spoiled groceries before they realize something is really wrong.
None of this shows up on day one. The fridge seems to work perfectly. The damage builds up over time, and it only becomes obvious once it’s too late to undo.
The fix that costs nothing
The whole problem has an embarrassingly simple solution, and it’s printed in your appliance’s manual whether anyone reads it or not.
All you have to do is let the fridge stand fully upright, unplugged, before you turn it on. That’s it. Gravity does the rest. The oil that got shaken loose during the move slowly drains back down out of the tubing and settles into its pool at the bottom. Once it’s back in place, the compressor can start up safely the next time you flip the switch.
How long to wait depends on how the fridge was moved.
- If it stayed fully upright the whole trip (wheeled a short distance on a dolly, straight up and back down, never laid on its side): a wait of 2 to 4 hours is usually enough. Samsung’s own guidance backs this shorter window when the unit stayed mostly vertical.
- If it was tilted a lot, laid on its side, or driven any real distance in a truck: wait a full 24 hours before plugging it in. Samsung specifically says the unit “should sit for up to 24 hours before it is plugged in,” depending on how it was positioned during transport.
- When in doubt, wait longer. There’s no downside to a few extra hours. There’s a huge downside to not waiting long enough.
This rule isn’t just a fridge thing. It applies to every appliance with a sealed compressor: freezers, window air conditioners, portable ACs, and dehumidifiers. The hOmeLabs window AC user manual (model HME020003N) puts it as plainly as it gets: “Please leave it standing upright and outside the box for 24 HOURS before plugging it in.” It’s right there on page 6, and almost nobody reads it.
The checklist for anyone moving a fridge or AC soon
If you’re about to move, if you’ve got a new fridge on the way, or if you just bought a portable AC, this is the whole rule in one place:
- Keep it upright during the move whenever you can. The more it stays vertical, the less oil gets shaken loose.
- Once it’s in its final spot, don’t plug it in yet. Push it into place, level it, hook up the water line if it has one, and walk away for a while.
- Wait at least 2 to 4 hours if it stayed upright the whole time, or a full 24 hours if it was tilted or laid on its side.
- Only then plug it in and turn it on. Give it another 4 to 6 hours to reach normal temperature before you load it with food.
- This applies to freezers, window ACs, portable ACs, and dehumidifiers too, not just fridges. Anything with a sealed compressor plays by the same rule.
