Every August, the same thing happens on porches all over the country. The front door starts to look tired. Little blisters bubble up on the paint. A strip peels off near the top. Come fall, the door looks worse than it did last year, even though you painted it.
So you do the sensible thing. You blame the paint. You grab a better brand, sand the door down, put on two coats. Next August, it happens again.
Here’s what’s really going on. The paint isn’t the problem on most of these doors. The real cause is something you put there on purpose, thinking it would help. And it’s in the door’s own warranty, in fine print almost nobody reads.
The August peel isn’t a paint problem
Painters see this every year. Homeowners repaint a front door, do everything right, and the paint still gives up within a summer or two. When the same door keeps doing this, the paint job is almost never the reason. It’s a heat problem, and a very specific kind that only happens on some doors and not others.
A 2026 buying guide from Consumer Reports says a south- or west-facing entry in a hot climate can trap enough heat around the front door to warp it and wreck the paint. Dark colors make it worse. Family Handyman has covered the same thing, pointing out that one common front-door setup creates a sealed pocket of air right up against the door. That pocket is what does the damage.
How hot the door actually gets
If you have a dark front door facing south or west, and it takes direct summer sun for hours at a stretch, that door gets really hot. Not warm. Hot.
A door pro writing on the trade site Woodweb checked one flat-black, south-facing entry door with no roof over it. He held a temperature gun to it and got a reading of 195°F (about 91°C). That’s hotter than the inside of a car sitting in a summer parking lot. The door already had thin cracks in the panels and joints.
That kind of heat is way past what any exterior door paint is built for. When the door gets that hot, the paint loses its grip on what’s underneath. That’s the blistering. That’s the peeling. That’s why a fresh coat doesn’t hold.
Why some doors keep doing this and others don’t
If the same door peels every summer, four things are usually true at the same time:
- The door faces south or west, so it gets afternoon sun.
- The door is a dark color, so it soaks up the sun’s heat instead of bouncing it back.
- There’s little or no roof or overhang shading it during peak sun hours.
- And something is trapping the heat right up against the front of the door.
That last one is the piece nobody thinks about. And it’s the piece you put there yourself, on purpose, thinking it would help.
The thing that’s actually cooking the paint
It’s the storm door.
To be exact, it’s a full-glass storm door left closed all summer with the glass panel in place.
Here’s what’s happening. Sunlight passes through the storm door’s glass. It hits the darker front door behind it. The dark door soaks it up and turns it into heat. But the heat can’t escape, because the storm door has boxed off a thin pocket of air right in front of the door. So that pocket heats up. And heats up. And heats up. Same thing that happens inside a car with the windows rolled up.
You put the storm door there for a good reason. Extra protection from wind and rain, maybe a little help on the heating bill. In cold weather, it does all of that. But once summer sun starts hitting the front of the house, the same setup that shielded the door in January is baking it in July.
This isn’t just a theory. It’s spelled out in the door companies’ own warranty paperwork.
Therma-Tru, the company that basically invented the fiberglass front door, says on its FAQ page that a storm door will only keep the entry door’s warranty intact if the storm door is “properly installed and properly vented.” That word “vented” is the whole game. A closed, full-glass storm door on a dark, sun-facing door is the opposite of vented.
Pella puts it even more bluntly in its wood front door warranty. It says the warranty is off the table if the door is used with any storm door, or if the door is “finished or painted Black (or any Dark Color) with any sun exposure.” Either one kills the warranty, and millions of American homes have both.
The simple fix
The fix is free and takes about a minute. Swap the glass panel for the screen panel, starting in late spring.
Most storm doors made in the last twenty years are combination doors, sometimes called ventilating storm doors. They come with two panels, glass and screen, that fit in the same frame. LARSON, Andersen, and Pella all make them. The panels slide out in about a minute with no tools.
The checklist:
- In late spring, pop the glass panel out and slide the screen panel in. That kills the greenhouse effect right at the source. Air moves through the screen, so nothing gets trapped.
- If your storm door has a sliding vent window instead of a swappable screen, slide it open in the morning and leave it open all summer. Same idea. Just give the hot air a way out.
- If your storm door only has a fixed glass panel with no vent, prop it wide open on hot afternoons. A door wedge or a hook-and-eye on the wall will hold it.
- In fall, put the glass panel back in. Now you’ve got the winter protection you wanted the storm door for in the first place.
- If your front door is dark, faces south, and has no roof or overhang above it, ask yourself if you even need the storm door. New insulated fiberglass and steel doors handle weather on their own. On that setup, the storm door might be doing more harm than good year-round.
That’s it. No new paint, no new door, no contractor. One change in spring, one in fall.
