You did everything right. You cut out the old caulk. You scrubbed the seam. You bought the good tube, the one with the lifetime warranty. You laid down a clean, straight bead and let it dry a full 24 hours before turning the shower back on. And then, somewhere between two weeks and a month later, the edge started to lift. A tiny curl in the corner first. Then a hairline shadow along the tub. And by week six, you can catch the whole bead with your fingernail and peel the entire run off in one long strip, like a sticker.
If you’ve done this once, you’ve probably done it three times. Maybe on the same seam. Every time, you figured you got a bad tube, didn’t wait long enough, or messed up a step you couldn’t put your finger on. So next round, you grab the fancier caulk, wait longer, prep harder. And it fails again. Same spot. Same window. The frustrating part isn’t that it fails. It’s that it fails no matter what brand you buy or how carefully you prep.
There’s a specific, invisible reason your fresh caulk keeps letting go. It’s got nothing to do with the tube you picked, the weather, or your technique. It’s about what’s still on the surface when you squeeze the trigger, and no amount of paper towels and scrubbing will get rid of it.

This is one of the most googled DIY headaches for a reason
Peeling caulk isn’t a rare unlucky-you thing. GE Sealants, one of the biggest sealant makers in the US, publishes a whole library of articles walking homeowners through exactly this problem: fresh caulk that lifts, cracks, or peels away within weeks. Their guidance is pretty blunt. Even a seam you scraped clean and swear looks perfect isn’t actually clean at the level the caulk cares about. Dow, the company behind DOWSIL professional sealants used in commercial glass work, publishes technical spec sheets that require a specific two-step surface prep before any bead goes down. Their sheet spells it out: the surface has to be “clean, dry, oil- and frost-free” or the bond won’t hold.
There’s a name for what’s happening. The industry calls it adhesion failure at the substrate. Fancy phrase, simple meaning: your caulk didn’t split down the middle, it let go at the edge, where the bead meets the tub or the tile. That’s why it peels off in one long strip. The caulk itself is fine. The bond between the caulk and your bathroom never really formed.
The catch nobody warns you about at the hardware store
When you buy a tube of silicone caulk, it tells you to “clean the surface” before applying. What it doesn’t tell you is that “clean” in the normal sense (soap, water, paper towel, maybe a rag with some spray cleaner) isn’t the same “clean” the caulk actually needs to bond. GE’s own consumer guide flat-out warns you not to use soap on a seam you’re about to caulk, because silicone won’t stick to any surface that has soap residue on it. That’s one landmine most people step on without knowing.
There’s a bigger landmine underneath that one, though. And it’s the one nobody talks about at the register. It’s not soap. It’s not water. It’s not dust. It’s something specific. It’s invisible. And it’s on the tub or tile of every single homeowner who has caulked the same seam more than once.
Why “I cleaned it” isn’t the same as “it’s clean”
Think about the last time you scraped out a seam. You cut the bead out, wiped it down, ran your finger over it, and everything felt smooth and dry. Nothing there. Ready for a fresh line. That whole reading of the surface, the one your eyes and fingers give you, is the trap. What your senses tell you is “clean” and what silicone caulk needs in order to actually bond are two completely different things.
So what’s actually going on. The old caulk you thought you scraped off has almost always left a super-thin, invisible film of the same stuff behind on the tub and tile. You can’t see this film. You can’t feel it. And soap and water won’t get rid of it. GE Sealants says it flat out on their homeowner how-to page: cured caulk leaves a thin smear behind that new caulk won’t bond to. Bopin, another sealant maker, puts it even more bluntly in their failures guide: the old sealant has to come off completely, there are no shortcuts, and new silicone won’t bond well to old silicone no matter how clean the old stuff looks.
The chemistry, in plain terms: silicone caulk is from the same family of materials that makes silicone bakeware nonstick and cooking spray slide right out of a pan. According to Silicone Sealants and Adhesives (2005), a peer-reviewed reference book by Andreas Wolf, cured silicone has one of the lowest “stickabilities” of any common material. It behaves the way a Teflon pan behaves toward a fried egg. Nothing wants to stick to it, including more of itself.
That’s exactly why silicone works so well as a sealant in a wet spot. Water beads off it. Soap slides off it. But when you go to replace an old bead, that same slick surface is now working against you. And every fresh tube you lay over it is doomed the second it touches the tub.
The $10 fix
The good news: the fix is genuinely cheap and takes about ten extra minutes. A regular bottle of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) from any pharmacy or hardware store, about $3 to $5 (€3 to €5, £2 to £4), is what GE, Dow, and pretty much every manufacturer’s spec sheet calls for on normal bathroom and kitchen surfaces. Add a lint-free cloth and a fresh utility blade and you’re under $10 (€9, £8) total. The exact order that actually holds:
- Step 1: Cut out every visible bit of the old bead. Use a fresh utility blade or a caulk removal tool. Score both edges of the old bead first, then peel it out in one long strip if you can. Don’t skip corners or leave a section that “looks fine.”
- Step 2: Wipe the seam down with rubbing alcohol on a lint-free cloth. This is the step that dissolves the invisible film your blade couldn’t lift. Dow’s spec sheet lays out a two-part wipe: alcohol on a lint-free cloth, wipe the seam hard, then follow with a dry wipe, and repeat if you need to. Flip the cloth often so you’re always wiping with a clean side. For really old, built-up caulk, mineral spirits works stronger on tile and metal.
- Step 3: Let the seam dry all the way. Give it 15 to 30 minutes of open air. Any moisture left in the joint messes with the new bead’s ability to set.
- Step 4: Skip the soap trick when smoothing. Don’t use dish soap to smooth the bead, because it leaves residue that’ll sabotage the next re-seal. A wet fingertip with plain water is the safe smoothing tool.
- Step 5: Give the new bead a full 24 hours before any water hits it. No shower, no sink, no wiping. The bead skins over in 30 minutes, but it doesn’t fully set all the way through for a day.
Why this one change fixes it
The blade takes off the caulk you can see. The alcohol wipe takes off the caulk you can’t. Together, they give the new bead a real clean surface to grab onto, instead of a slick invisible film that guarantees the same peeling failure you’ve been chasing for years. Prepped this way, a bathroom bead usually lasts many years instead of a few weeks.
