Before you scrub that black bathroom caulk again, check this first: the reason is one most people miss

You spray it. You scrub it. The black spots along your tub fade for a day, maybe two. Then they’re back. Same spots, same shape, same thin line where the tub meets the wall.

Next month you’re standing there with the same bottle, doing the exact same thing, and getting the exact same result.

Most people assume this is a cleaning problem. They buy a stronger spray. They scrub harder. They start wondering if the whole bathroom needs to be redone.

It isn’t a cleaning problem. Not really.

Why this looks so weird

Take a second and think about what’s actually happening.

You’re using bleach. Bleach is what people use for everything from laundry stains to shower mold. On the tile above the caulk, it works fine. On the tub itself, it works fine. On the shower door, it works fine. On the toilet, sink, and floor tiles, it works fine.

But drop it on that one thin white strip along the tub, and it’s like the black just laughs at you. It fades, sure. But it comes back within a couple of weeks, sometimes faster. You didn’t change anything, and yet somehow the exact same spots are dark again.

If bleach kills germs and mold on every other surface in your bathroom, why can’t it beat this one tiny line?

What people usually try next (and none of it sticks)

At this point most people go through the same list.

Switch to a “stronger” cleaner. Doesn’t help. Try baking soda and vinegar paste. Fades the color for a couple of days, then it grows back. Buy one of those foam sprays advertised for “black mildew.” Same story. Scrub with an old toothbrush until your hand hurts. Same story. Run the bathroom fan an extra 30 minutes after every shower. It helps a tiny bit. Not enough.

By month three you’re pretty sure your bathroom is haunted.

Here’s what makes this so tricky. The thing turning black looks like a solid, sealed piece of white plastic. It seems like it should be easy to clean. It’s smooth. It’s right there. You can touch it.

And that’s the trap. Because it isn’t behaving anything like what your eyes are telling you.

The part almost nobody notices

That thin white strip along your tub isn’t a solid piece of plastic. It’s a soft, slightly rubbery material that acts a bit like a sponge as it ages. When it’s fresh, it’s smooth and sealed tight. But after a year or two of hot water, steam, soap, and daily use, it develops tiny cracks and holes way too small to see with your eye.

Once those little openings appear, water starts sneaking in behind the strip every single time you shower. Not a lot. Just enough to stay damp back there, all the time.

And that’s where the black is actually growing. Not on the surface you’re cleaning. Underneath it.

The people who make caulk for a living have known this for years. Sashco, a US sealant maker, says it plainly on their own website: even if you replace the caulk, if the growth is underneath, it just comes back and you’re right back where you started.

That’s why bleach loses. Regular household bleach is mostly water, with only a small amount of germ-killer in it. On smooth tile that works fine, because the germ-killer sits right on top of what it needs to reach. But on a surface with tiny holes, the germ-killing part vanishes into the air in seconds. The water part sinks in. So you dry out the color on top while the growth deep in those little holes stays alive and comes right back.

This isn’t just internet advice. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says on its own mold page that using bleach isn’t recommended as a routine way to clean up mold, and that as long as moisture is available, mold keeps coming back no matter how much you clean.

A 30-second test that tells you exactly what’s going on

Try this quick check. It comes straight from Sashco.

Soak a cotton ball in regular household bleach. Set it right on top of one of the black spots. Walk away for one minute.

Come back and look:

  • If the black is gone almost right away (within a few seconds), the growth was sitting on top. Normal cleaning will handle it.
  • If it takes 45 seconds or longer, or it doesn’t fully disappear, the growth is under the strip. Scrubbing the outside will never end it.

Most people fall in the second group.

The fix that actually holds

The answer is straightforward: you don’t clean it, you replace it. But there’s a right way and a wrong way, and the wrong way puts most people back here in three months.

The whole job runs under $15 (about €14) in materials and about 15 minutes of hands-on work.

1. Pull the old strip out completely. Every trace. This is the step most people rush, and it’s why the next try fails too. A small plastic caulk removal tool from any hardware store costs about $7 to $10 (€6 to €9) and lifts the old strip out cleanly without scratching the tub. Never squeeze new caulk over old. It won’t stick right, and any mold trapped underneath just keeps growing under the new layer.

2. Wipe the empty joint with rubbing alcohol. This is the step almost every DIY video skips, and it’s a big reason so many redo jobs fail within months. Rubbing alcohol dries the joint fully and lifts off soap film and body oil. GE Sealants calls out this exact step in their own instructions. This Old House recommends the same. Let it air-dry a couple of minutes. The joint has to be totally dry before you go on.

3. Lay a fresh line of 100% silicone bathroom sealant. Look on the tube for “100% silicone” and “mold and mildew resistant.” GE Advanced Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath, sold at Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Walmart, comes with a 10-year mold-free warranty. A 2.8 oz squeeze tube (about 83 ml), plenty for a standard tub, runs about $6 to $8 (€5 to €7) and doesn’t need a caulk gun.

4. Give it a full day to harden before running water. Most bathroom silicones are ready for water in 30 minutes, but real full hardening takes closer to 24 hours. Waiting the day is what separates a seal that lasts years from one that peels in weeks.

One honest heads-up

If, when you pull the old strip out, you find soft or crumbling wall behind it, a musty smell, or dark staining well past the joint onto the wall itself, that’s a bigger problem. Water has already worked its way behind the tile, and it needs a real inspection, not a DIY fix. The steps above end the mold cycle at the caulk line. They don’t fix damage that’s already spread past it.
